  • [SOLVED] No Sound in MIR beyond Instrument 10

    Hi all,

I am building templates in MIR (newest version, newest version of VI Pro and just update elicenser 5 minutes ago).  I am trying to create a massive String template that has all the sections loaded and ready to go so that I can layer them in any fashion I want with the click of a button.  The problem is I get no sound at all from instruments 11 or higher.  Only from instruments 1 through 10.

I thought maybe the template was broken or corrupted so I started a brand new one and loaded 11 instruments.  I put a sample from the special edition into instrument one and it worked.  Put in a different sample into instrument 10 and it worked.  Put one in 11 and nope, nothing.  If I double click the instrument icon, I can clearly see the outputs in VI Pro (1 and 2) lighting up but nothing makes it to the mixer in MIR or beyond.  I tried with appassionata strings, special edition, solo strings etc and the result is the same.

Now the interesting thing was I then thought maybe it's a limitation on the number of outputs (normally I only use 4-5 instruments).  So I grouped them into MIR instrument groups (4 in each group).  4 solo, 4 chamber, 4 orchestral and 4 appassionata.  This time, 1-15 worked, but not 16.  I was completely confused.  So I inserted a 17th instrument (harp from special edition) and it worked!!  But still track 16 didn't.  I then tried to delete track 15 which was working thinking it would force instrument 16 up to slot 15 and make it work.  Nope, Even now the 11th instrument and higher doesn't work in a non grouped template, and 16 doesn't work on a grouped template.

This baffles me but some assistance would be appreciated.

    1.  Windows 7 64bit Enterprise, i7 860, 8GB RAM

    2.  Newest version of MIR, VI Pro, VE Pro, Vienna Suite and eLicencer (all downloaded today)

    3.  DAW is irrelevent because I don't even have it open, I am only working in MIR with nothing else open on the computer.

    4.  M-Audio Firewire Audiophile 2496 with most recent driver

    5.  MIR Setup is as follows: Latency is set to default (512 in the sound driver properties), output channels (2) assigned to the audiophile L/R.  Buffer multiplier set to 1x.  dynamic processing is checked.  MIR Reads 1 physical CPU, 4 cores, 8 logical cores.

Let me know if you need any more information.  This is my office computer so I will be trying this exact scenerio as soon as I get home on my main studio machine.

    Thanks!

  • Strange, but I'm sure we can work this out  (I'm mixing a MIR Project which uses 17 VIs right now, and they all play ;-) ...). MIR allows for 128 instruments, MIR SE still for 32.

First of all: The "quiet" instruments have their volumes set to reasonable values (-6 dB might be a save value to start with) and aren't muted ...? Sorry if I'm asking the obvious, but I've been cought by basic stuff like that myself. 8-)

If I understand you correctly,  you're using VIPro, not the free Vienna Instument player, is that right? If you look on the blue Matrix List on the left of the VIPro GUI - are all outputs assigned to 1+2? MIR can't see any other output from any virtual instrument (not only VIPro) than the first stereo pair, as the Icons don't support multiple inputs for several reasons. It's explained in the VIPro-manual on page 10 as well as on page 17.

Another possible source for your problem might  be that an MIR Icon stays muted as long as it is not located within the yellow HotSpot area of a Venue (press "H" to see it highlighted). This might be the case if you use another Venue than the one you had selected when you were creating the Template you're working on.

Groups shouldn't have any effect on the Icon, except you have chosen to link volume and/or mute within the Group - in that case, an instrument's volume could be dependant on another Icon's controls. For now, I would delete all Goups, just to be sure.

Let me know if you found the solution for your problem.

  • Thank you Dietz!  You hit it right on the money.  The problem was the muted icon.

I was adding instrument after instrument after instrument but not moving the icon.  All I did was add a new instrument, add samples and then move on to the next instrument.  Eventually, MIR would create the instrument OFF the stage and I was getting silence.  All I had to do was move the icon to the stage and it worked.  I planned on moving them around after I put them all in the template but now I see I need to move them on to the stage before testing the loaded samples for that instrument.  Additionally, I hadn't loaded a venue yet.  I was still sitting on the default startup screen which is why the stage was so small to begin with.

Glad this was so easy to resolve.  Thanks again!  Back to making templates!

  • Good to hear that you're up and running again. :-)

Note to myself ... I think we will have to get rid of the Default Venue (... which is not more than one single impulse position from the Grand Hall of the Vienna Konzerthaus, actually). As the manual points out, it was meant to be used for quick checks of a new install or changes in the audio hardware. But it seems as it causes confusion among MIR users more than it helps.

    Kind regards,

  • Maybe give the user the option of picking the "default" venue that comes up when they open up MIR each time?

    Just a thought,

I think either an option for a user definable default, or no default venue at all would be an improvement.
