  • I've been wondering about this myself. I've got two Mac Pros in my system, and I thought it would be more efficient if my VEPro traffic could go directly computer to computer through the second ethernet ports on these machines, without going through the router. I hope somebody knows if this can be done, and how to do it.

  • just plug the second port directly to your second computer

  • would you need a cross-over cable?

    thanks

  • with 2 Macs you dont need a cross-over cable

    Don't know with a PC

Wow could it really be that simple? I'll try it and report back.. wondering how the slave machine gets its IP address..

Say, maybe I go from EN2 on the master, to EN2 on the slave, and have EN1 on both machines connected to the switch/router?

    Man, hope I don't blow anything up!![:$]

  • Of course you must set  Network in system pref, to using DHCP

If you have problem, use "assist me "

It is better if you can set the IP manually, just copy what "using DHCP" has set and put it to manually and put a "NON USED" IP address \

Ah, but if I do that, how do the computers know to use the straight connection, and not the regular switch?

I don't think there is a way in the VEP server to tell the the computer which port to use, is there?

  • so you just put one cable between both

That's why you set static IP address for en2 on each machine. You can set a static IP per NIC. It is advised to do so. Make sure it's set out of the range of your DHCP addresses.
