  • 16th note articulation primer

    i've been trying for two days now to get a simple rhythmic figure to sound convincing and i'm failing miserably. so it would be nice if some of you pros can chime in. i've attached a small image that shows the figure (which is repeated many time on various pitches). it's supposed to be played on violins (for starters, although the other strings will join in also). i tried the universal matrix and i tried splitting the slurred notes and the staccato notes on their own tracks with different articulations. if this were 1993, i'd be excited. back then i did this on a proteus, but now i was hoping for something better, i.e. more realistic.

    so the point is to get

    where the first note is accented and connected to the second, followed by somewhat softer staccatos. i'm at 90 bpm by the way.

    i'd be very interested in hearing your suggestions.

  • i have the symphonic cube "pro edition", so everything without the apassionata, i guess.

  •  Sorry, that's still not clear. Are you talking Symphonic Cube Pro Edition as in Gigastudio, or as in Symphonic Cube Vienna Instrumnets?

    The reason that I ask about which collection, is that I would do it a different way with the Chamber Strings than with the Orchestral Strings.

  • i'm using vienna instruments (pro) in logic and performer. but your question is interesting, because i always thought the whole point of the strict folder structure is that you're able to try both with the same midi file. in this case, i was trying the orchestral strings.

  • OK, well for the Orchestral Strings I would probably use 1 note sfz patch followed by 3 short staccatos. I would also set the sfz to be Velocity xFade and do a steep curve down as soon as the note starts. If you need a more immediate accent on the sfx then layer it with a staccato patch at a low volume.

    For the Chamber I would use the second staccato (the first has too much bite) or even the spicc reps.

    However, what I would really do is blend both of the above, probably with some Appassionata as well, to give a good section sound.

  • thanks for these tips - i tried both and now the chamber strings start to sound better than the orchestral set. i don't have appasionata. probably not enough resources for a mix once the rest gets going too, but perhaps try it in isolation and make a bounce. that would be one way.
