Joel Goldsmith's Stargate Atlantis Into
I have googled searched this and can't really find an answer to this. I left a message for Joel on MySpace but he has never replied. Probably too busy with Stargate SGU series. Would anyone know from what VSTi's he is using for the Intro? It almost sounds Hollywood EWQL and yet it has the flavor of VSL with a lot of effect. My ears just cannot tell. Would anyone know just from knowledge of this or from listening to it? Maybe this is a real orchestra? Its ironic if it is because it shows you how little I know real from fake. And if its a real one how close could VSL replicate this? Star Trek Voyager also has that type of sound and not sure what Vendor(s) were used to create that intro? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-DaXyxLY9fc Here is the link to the SGA into: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=trWzoj7cHkU These are the sounds I would like to create and make as authentic as possible Thanks for trying to answer this as best possible.

As a matter of fact I interviewed Joel on the VSL podcast a while ago .. you can find it at http://www.hetoreyn.com/consulting/interview/interview.html (go to bottom of page), We talked quite a lot about his setup and what he uses to compose with.
At the time he did the Atlantis theme he had many different libraries .. almost all of them, but I know that at that time he had the VSL Pro Edition cube. If you go to his website www.freeclyde.com he has a section on the evolution of the Atlantis theme .. starting with his early mocks ups .. to the final version which was done with a real orchestra.
So yes it was real in the Atlantis theme .. and for the entire pilot episode. All the others are done with Samples. I believe you can replicate this pretty closely with the current VSL VI's. But like all things .. it probably sounds better with the real thing.
