  • Is Giga or EXS24 necessary, or ..

Can the full glory of the VSL samples be tapped in, say, Cubase SX without having to get GigaStudio or some other such thing? What about using VSL with the HALion sampler?

My setup is Cubase SX with a keyboard controller (and that's it, so far). What advantage or necessity would there be to also acquiring Giga? Is that crucial to using the VSL?

    Many thanks!

  • Hi Paul,
to get the "full glory" of the VSL you will have to use Gigastudio (Windows)or EXS-24 (only Logic, Win/Mac), till Herb decides to support more samplers besides these two.
Any other sampler (HALion, Kontakt etc.) is NOT enabled to run the specific tools that come with the VSL (Alternation Tool, Legato Tool...) I own HALion and Kontakt, so I can tell you: HALion is completely unuseful for ALL kinds of orchestra-sample libraries. Indeed, it's possible to run Peter Siedlaczek's Advanced Orchestra with it, but HALion uses a LOT of the PC's performance - that's the main factor why it's not useful for big orchestra-libraries.
In my opinion: Using the sampler's native formate is the ONLY practical way to get the FULL enjoyment. Of course - HALion and Kontakt are enabled to import gig-files, but as I said above: You can not use the great tools (Giga-Import in Kontakt is still very unsatisfactory - even with the new 1.2-Update - it is still not possible, to import the giga-key-dimensions.
In the next time, I will switch to Logic and EXS-24 (Win) -for aslong they don't support a Win-Sampler besides Gigastudio - buy the First Edition in EXS - and later buy the Pro in a different formate (maybe Kontakt ??? - pleeeaaaaasse Herb [;)] )
