    Just trying out the demo for VI Pro.  I use a Mac mini server as the host machine and control it from anther OS X laptop using screen sharing over a 802.11N wireless network.  When I invoke either the standalone VI Pro or a VI Pro instance within VE Pro, the user interface is completely unresponsive.  I get no mouse traction to the remote laptop.  This was never a problem using the regular VI either standalone or within VE Pro.  Is there some setting that gives the UI some priority?  I can't even navigate to load a single instrument.

    I am running OS X 10.6.4.  The mini is a 2.66 GHz core 2 duo.

    You're not seriously thinking of using VEPro over wifi? Even "n" is only going to get you whatever throughput your router can offer -- which is rarely to spec.

    What n-router are you using? See this link re: router specs and the (lack of) throughput that many (most) n routers offer.

    I'm only controlling it over wifi.  All the software runs on the mini.  It works fine this way for my requirements using VE Pro and the regular VI. There is no audio data being sent over the network.

    Then why not just use apple screen sharing? That's a sure thing, right?

    Did you read my original post?  That is exactly what I am doing.  It doesn't work with VI Pro.  Thus the entire reason for this thread.

    Ah, but that's illogical! ??? If screen sharing is working, then it's simply moving the cursor -- the content of the screen is irrelevant, right? I use screen sharing with all kinds of apps and I even help my daughter do her homework when I'm working late at the studio...  screen sharing seems to always work regardless of the screen content. Could something be hogging network resources (since VE Pro is a network aware app) ?

    Out of curiosity, if you hardwire the network connection and use static IP addresses, does it work? 

    Another thought -- can you lower the VE Pro network ports available to a minimum, and see if that helps?

    it sounds like VE Pro wants the network and you only have limited bandwith over wifi. Can you make VE Pro not use the network??

    Jeremy, it's not VE Pro.  Please read my initial post.  The problem also exists when running VI Pro standalone.  The only program running on the mini is VI Pro standalone.  The only program running on the laptop is screen sharing.  VE Pro is not part of the equation in this case.

    The problem does not exist when running VE Pro with the regular VI.  Again further evidence it is not VE Pro.  

    Something in VI Pro is breaking the screen sharing program.  I am guessing that VI Pro is violating Apple's scheduling guidelines which causes screen sharing to not work adequately.

    Since you run screen sharing routinely, please try to duplicate these results on your system and report back.

    Hate to report that VI Pro works in every possible way for me on a screen shared machine.

    Host: G5 10.5.8

    Slave: macbook Pro OS 10.6.4

    Connected via gigabit (wired) switch.

    Tried running Vi Pro standalone -- fine.

    Tried running VI Pro within VE Pro. fine.

    Tried running Vi Pro as AU in Logic 9.1.1. fine.

    Can't break it.

    can you test with wired gigabit and see if it's your router?

    You know.  I am sure there are system configurations that work.  But as I said in my original post (which you seem to want to ignore) I am using a wireless network.  This network works fine for my application with the previous generation of the product.  VI Pro is being marketed as an upgrade to that working product.  I mentioned in this thread that it doesn't seem to work in my system environment and asked if there is a way to make this work.  If not fine.  But no where in the system requirements does it say that some system configurations that used to work for VI will no longer work for VI Pro.

    If you wish to continue this discussion, please limit the responses to address my original question.

    I tried to set up a network similar to yours with an iMac and my Macbook Pro connected through a 802.11N WLAN and Screen Sharing actually worked fine both ways with either VI Pro or VE Pro/VI Pro, so it seems there must be something else in the equation...

     

    I forwarded your support request to our developers now - let´s see if they can think of something!

    Thanks Marnix.

    I tried a bunch of things yesterday with respect to altering my network preferences, initializing my machines, modifying screen sharing parameters.  I have made some progress to the point that it is usable, but still has at times quite annoying flicker when moving the mouse.  Mouse tracking is good when I start the program and load a file.  But once I play some notes on the virtual keyboard, then mouse tracking begins to flicker and continues to flicker for about 5 seconds after I stop playing notes.  It is then stable again until I play more notes.  I don't know what I did to get it to start working better.  But whatever I do now, it seems to work in the same manner.  So I can't get it to be as bad as what it was a couple days ago.  

    Also, I connected to the host using Jaanu VNC on my iPhone and the mouse tracking using VI Pro is consistently good in this case.

    So, it seems other VNC programs work much better than screen sharing in my system.  I am getting very good results with COVNC.  Seems this issue is resolved for now.
