    Friends, I have a question concerning VE Pro  ethernet connections on my MAC..  Currently I have my main MAC using PT8. I also use a PC with VE.  I connect the PC using the ADAT pipe to my Digi unit. Works fine however,  I would like to purchase VE PRO and use the ethernet.  I have many connections on my MAC......  Internet, D-Command, and extension units for screen and mouse all use the ethernet on my MAC.  Will VE Pro work if I connect my PC (slave unit running VE/VI ) to yet another empty ethernet port connected to my MAC????

     Networking can be very complicated, so I would suggest that you d/l the demo and try it for yourself.

    I could do that, but I might save hours of work if I knew this could or could not be done.  There must be others who have this question.

    My Mac has two Ethernet ports:

    the first I use for normal network (Internet, printing, Euphonix MCMix ...), with DHCP

    the second is connected to my PC-slave only, with fixed IP (VEPro or MIR Se)

    works like a charm :-)

    Networking can be tricky if you don't know what you're doing.

    1. Invest in a gigabit switch. Less than $50 -- it will allow your control surface and all computers to speak to each other.

    2. Either learn about networking, else invest in a consult with a networking specialist. Not music or audio. Plain old vanilla connect your computers together kind of geek.

    3. Unless you have a specific purpose and the expertise for using both gigabit ports on your macpro, only use one. See #2.

    Gigabit is a robust format and can move LOTS of bandwidth. Your control surface use very very little bandwidth. Internet uses very very little (if you have a GOOD switch that actually works to spec, you have 1000 Mbps avail - internet EVEN if you have Fios or wideband or other Docsis 3 service is only 50Mbps).

    Invest in a quality switch and plug it all in. It is designed to work.

    Yes, I am using a switcher box by Cisco system.. 8 port. So, I guess I'll just plug in the cable from the PC (witch will also have a switch box) and see if it will communicate with my MAC. By the way.....   I was told by a big music retailer that VE Pro will not function this way.  I think he is wrong.  So, concluding one should be able to connect a slave to a master computer even though the master has several other "things" attached to it's ethernet port via a gigabit switch.

    1. Please name the retailer. Bad advice should always be called out and checked. This person should not be giving advice.

    2. Terminology. A Gigabit SWITCH is like an active patchbay, and only allows packets that are going from point A to point B to actually go there, reserving bandwidth for data from other devices to share the wire's bandwidth. Google "ethernet switch" or "network switch" and read what the switch is doing, and why it is important to have a good one.

    Well, I think I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.   Perhaps he feels that with all the attachments on my MAC (SWITCHER), VEPro will not function properly.   

    I fell confident in my Cisco switcher. My PC (slave) will also need one.   I'll purchase VEPro and see if it works.  I can always go back to the sound card using VE Pro.  

    Now, if I encounter problems.. How will I know it's the switcher?  Will the connection drop,  distorted sound?  Anything I should look for??  Going directly into the MAC is not an option for me.....  Even if it worked that way, I could not do it.

    What does that mean???

    The networking is basic stuff for anyone who has built a small network. Static IPs all the way around. Connect everything to a gigabit switch. If it's not gigabit, don't use it. That's it. If this is beyond your scope of expertise, I'm sure you can find someone locally that can do this for you in a few minutes. But don't hire your salesman, since he knows very little based on what you're telling us.

    I am typing faster than thinking.   You are correct. My studio would not function with just a 'switcher'.     It's a "switch".... I stand corrected.  no "er" in this post anymore.

      Yes... we  have static IPs...  and the Cisco box is a switch...    so I'll  download the Demo  and see.

     There's only ONE switch in the setup; not a spearate one for the PC...

    YES.. correct again.. My mistake again.  I have one switch for all, including the PC.... Just was not thinking clearly... Gotta get back in the computer room more often...

    I just should have asked.. Can VEPro work with several peripherals connected to a switch.   The answer is YES...
