  • Pro Tools Crash

Hi Just installed my new Special Edition. Sounding great, but having a few crashes. Seems to happen if there is midi information being played at the same time as I change preset or patch. It then loads up the next patch but no sound until I take off the plug-in completely and then pull it back back up again. Sometimes it crashes Pro Tools and a forced quit is needed. I am running OSX 10.4.11 and Pro Tools 7.3 on a G5 Power PC Dual 2Ghz with 3GB of RAM. Any tips people? Thanks

    Welcome Randy [:)],

are you using the latest eLCC and the latest VSL Software?

    Best,

    Paul

  • Hi Paul! I see there is a new LCC, so I'm just downloading this now. I am on software version 2.0, as it seems 2.1 is just for Mac OS 10.5 and I am only running 10.4. Or.....will the latest VSL software also work on 10.4? ta

  • Hi Randy,

Vienna Instruments will work with OS X 10.4., alzthough this support will expire at some point. Also, the Mac G5 2 GHz will be a little slow, I´m afraid....

Let me know how it goes!

    Paul

  • Hiya Yeah we are going to upgrade the mac soon and put in as much RAM as possible. Just to be clear - the latest version of the software 2.1 will work with my 10.4 right? thanks

  • any info on this?? It seems to only mention 10.5 and 10.6 for version 2.1...... Also how do I check what build number I already have, as I might need to go to 4017 before upgrading further.

    Hi,

you will be fine with the latest version 2.1.5740, available here.

Your version number is displayed in the left side of the "Preset" window in Vienna Instruments.

  • Thanks Paul - appreciate it!

  • I just carbon copy cloned my hard drive to a new Dual 2.5 G5 mac from a Dual 2 and having major issues. When I try load the plug-in up in Pro Tools I get the rainbow spinning ball and I have to force quit Pro Tools. The finder it then left with a white rectangle on the screen that can only be got rid of with a restart. Very weird. I have upgraded to build 4017 in pre for the 2.1 upgrade, but having the same errors. Please can anyone suggest something. I need to get VSL up and running to finish a project pronto and am at a loss! ta

  • Hello Randy,

I´d uninstall all VSL software with the provided Uninstallers and install the latest versions after a restart. That´s in case you copied the system drive (which is not the best idea, I´d say).

    Best,

    Paul

    Hi Randy,

I´m afraid I´ll have to correct myself there. Vienna Instruments 2.1 need OS X 10.5 or higher, but you can download and install Vienna Instruments 2.0.4017 from the archive of the User Area.

    Sorry for that misinformation,

    Paul

    Randy,

Cloning a system drive form one machine to another is NOT a good idea!!!

The OS is not identical - you can't simply pop a system drive from one machine and pop it into another - well you could try it, but obviously you are having issues.

IF you want a system that simply works, you're going to have to do this the hard way -- but the sure thing.

    1. Insert an original Mac OS DVD.

    2. Use Disk Utilities and wipe the system drive.

    3. Install your OS from scratch.

    4. Download and run the latest OS combo updater from Apple. DO NOT use Software Update utility!

    5. OK to run Software Update utility for other stuff that is not the core OS.

    6. When your machine is stable with the latest OS, THEN install your software from original distributions.

"But this is a pain in the ass!"

Yes. Do you want your machine to work, or not?

    Good luck.

    J

  • Well I have cloned the system drive onto the Dual 2.5 from the Dual 2! Had no idea it was not recommended. I've often cloned system drives as a backup, so why is this not a good idea? Is there a difference cloning from machine to machine from doing a clone all in the Dual 2 and then physically moving the hard drive to the Dual 2.5? Paul - I'll try a deinstall and use latest software for OS 10.4. Jeremy - Yeah I hear you man, but the sheer number of bits of software would make this way to hard to accommodate due to studio commitments at the moment. In the end I have only had issue with Altiverb and IK Multimedia, which is easily resovled by simply re-authorising them. The only problem I have following the clone is with Vienna sadly.

    Hi Randy,

I´m afraid this is a misunderstanding - the latest version will not work unter OS X 10.4.... you´ll need to get 2.0.4017, available in the archive of the Vienna Instruments software.

Please give it a try, even before you install the OS. Might help.

    Best,

    Paul

  • It's fine Paul - I meant the latest VSL compatible with 10.4 which is as you say 2.0.4017, so I'll only use that one. Seems to be working okay today on the CD shipped OS, but I'll still get 4017. These downloads work fine as upgrades right? There is no uninstalling the previous version then adding the new one? ta

  • Hi Randy,

uninstallation is only necessary on OS X when you are "downgrading".

    Paul
