How the keyswitches work in Finale?

I would like to understand better the way Finale and Vienna Instruments communicate...(I'm using windows 7 64 bit/Finale 2010b)

If i cant hear the right articulation playing-what should i do? Record a keyswitch and then hide it from the score? Other methods?

I use right now chamber strings and they play for example nicely staccatos, but when it needs to switch to sustained notes it goes to legato...

Any hints?

Hello avarres!

Currently we have Finale Human Playback Preferences (HPP) only for the Special Edition. That's because the HPP had some problems with sending two switches and that's necessary for our bigger collections. Finale 2011 seems to be more reliable in this matter. So we will make some more settings for our bigger collections in the future.

In the meantime you can do as you have written (hide the keyswitches from the score) or make your own HPP. If you want to make your own HPP (and your own VI matrices), I recommend using only the cells 1A-12A in the VI matrix. This way you will have to set up only one controller in the HPP.

Sorry, i forgot to mention, that i use ONLY Special Edition samples in Finale...although i own most of the big libraries.

So i should use keyswitches? Does this mean, that i have to use this with every articulation or can i use for example Vienna HPP staccatos and hidden keyswitch for say...sustained chamber strings?

In this case you can just use the HPP settings we prepared for the Special Edition. You don't have to record any switches then. Please notice, that these settings will only work with the Special Edition matrices and not with custom matrices. More details on how to use the HPP you can find in the readme file that is included.
