  • Finale 2011 Anxiety

    Help!

I've upgraded to Finale 2011 because I want to use VE Pro with the IRCAM Solo Instruments, on a single staff, for the new piece I'm starting. But when I try to set up my AU instruments, nothing will be seen when I assign VSL (or anything) to channels 1-16 in the Audio Unit Instruments window. That is, if I put VSL in "slot" 1-16, it doesn't appear in the AU selection popup in the Instrument Definition window. If anybody has had this problem, please let me know how you fixed it. I've tried trashing my prefs and working with a Default document, but same problem.

  • Hello.

I'm receiving my 2011 copy this afternoon.  I'll try it out this evening and let you know what happens.

  • Hello jbm!

Just in case, don't forget to always start the VE Pro Server before starting Finale.

  • Hello Andi,

    Well, I suspect I may have to re-install, but here's what's happening.

    1) Set MIDI/Audio > Play Finale Through Audio Units

    2) MIDI/Audio > Instrument Setup > Audio Units Instruments

    - Set Vienna Ensemble Pro in "slot" 1-16

    - Set UVI Workstation in "slot" 17-32

    - Set Synthogy Ivory in "slot" 33-48

    3) Go to MIDI/Audio > Instrument List, and create a "new instrument" on Staff 1: "Flute VSL"

In the Instrument Definition window, the "Core MIDI" line, which has a pop-up to select from the available instruments only shows UVI and Synthogy, *not* VSL. The same pattern holds for whatever I put in slot 1-16 in the Audio Unit Instruments window - whatever is set for channels 1-16 won't show up in the Instrument Definition window.

Just going through it again this morning, I had the added pleasure of an absolutely horrific digital noise sound, ripping through my speakers. Luckily, I wasn't wearing headphones, and this is on my laptop, so it was just through the little built-in speakers, otherwise it would have ripped my ears out. This has been reported on the Finale form, btw.

If I just accept this 16 channel "offset", and have everything begin at slot 17-32, it will work. But the strange thing is that the *names* are offset as well, so that with the set-up described above, I'd have to select UVI to get VSL, and Synthogy to get UVI. Honestly, it's just a complete mess.

So, I don't have much hope for anything less than a re-install. But I'm definitely *not* going to wipe my system - Finale's not worth it. If ripping out and re-installing Finale doesn't work, then I'll just find a way to do what I need to do in Sibelius (or Notion).

If you have any ideas how else I might solve this problem, definitely let me know.

    Thanks,

    J.

  • hmm... so you're suggesting using the VE Pro standalone, then? Problem is, UVI and Ivory are not 64-bit compatible, so I can't load them in the VE Pro 64-bit. What I wanted to do was have VE Pro handling the VSL stuff, then have Ivory and UVI hosted in Finale. The main trick was to have UVI (IRCAM Solo Instruments) on voices 3/4 and VSL on voices 1/2, of the same staff. This would make for a simple composing environment, while still getting the extended techniques I use from IRCAM (hint, hint: if VSL would sample them, I'd have none of these problems! [;)]).

  • ...well, that wasn't quite fair. Obviously, Finale wouldn't suddenly work, as advertised, just because VSL sampled some extended techniques. But I wouldn't be using Finale...

I'll work it out somehow. Thanks for the help.

  • Hello J.!

Sorry, if I didn't make myself clear. I didn't mean using VE Pro standalone. Set it up in the Audio Units Instruments menu just like you have written earlier in this thread.
Now I can see your problem a bit clearer. I haven't tried so far splitting up a staff on two different AUinstruments. If that doesn't work, you could use two staves - one for VE Pro and one for UVI.

    Best,
    Andi

  • I've actually upgraded to the full version of Notion (from SLE VSL Edition), so I'm going to try a set-up in there, just to see how it goes. I really like the Sequencer Staff, and with the ease of having multiple hidden staves, assigned to common instruments, I think I could actually build quite a flexible composition set-up. We'll see.

I'll probably also trying re-installing Finale, from scratch, but I've already dumped several hours into it, so I'm not going to put in much more effort. And of course, there's always the option of going back to trusty old Sibelius, and using Instrument changes...

    thanks,

    J.
