  • vienna ensemble (free version) and reverb (cubase 5)

I watched the video of Christian Kardeis' special edition demo.  Is it possible to use the reverbs included in Cubase 5 (as Christian does) along with the vienna ensemble free version.  As you might assume, I am very new to all of this. Inserts, sends,  and routing are all very new and a bit confusing to me, but I'm making slow progress.

Thanks in advance for the education!!

  • I am so frustrated--please, there must be someone out there.  I feel I have the concept right, but have been struggling with this for hours. I have a midi track complete in cubase 5, then I route it to vienna instruments, dry but great!  now, somehow I need to route it to the FX track in cubase and run it through FX-1 roomworks for the reverb and their is simply not the option in VE.  It only lets me route it to the speaker outs.  there is no question that it is operator error-but I just cant find it.

Can someone please give me a clue.

  • I'm not sure if this is the right answer but perhaps this will help: in the Vienna Ensemble (VE) window, hit Escape to go to the 'mixer view'. At the bottom of each track, you should see a dropdown list where you can select the output channels for that particular track (i.e., "Master Bus" or "HW Out 1/2" or "HW Out 3/4" up to "HW Out 31/32".).

This is what I use to route the audio out from a given track/instrument, back to a track in my DAW. For instance, if a Vienna Ensemble track is routed out to "HW Out 3/4", then back in my DAW I have a track receiving from VE on outputs 3/4 - this is my 'audio track' for that instrument.

Does this make sense in terms of your DAW?  I've been using Reaper so long, I'm starting to think the way the Reaper routes things ...

I hope this helps. If I've been unclear, let me know, or perhaps someone else can be more clear.

  • Thanks Larry for responding--it gave me some things to work on this morning!  My issue is routing back into cubase.  I see at the bottom of the mixer of VE all of the outs.  HW OUT 1/2---HW OUT 3/4--etc.  Let me explain how I have routed.

    1.  I begin in Cubase & create a Midi track (string bass)--output routing to "vienna Ensemble"

    2. Now I go to the VE interface & insert instrument in VE (String Bass) , assigned the orchestral strings from the special edition MATRIX files, choose channel 1, and 1. Plugin MIDI IN. I route the instrument to "HW Out 1/2.  It is the only out that gets me sound playing out of the speakers.

    3.  Here is where I am confused:  It seems to me I need to create an "Audio track" in cubase so that I can being IN the sound from VE into cubase--then route it to my reverb--then route it OUT.  But, a HW 1/2 (or any other HW track) is not available as a choice in the "input routing selection box" when i create an audio track. the only buses that appear are the ones I create in VST connections---But how do I get that sound from VE back into Cubase?

I was successful this morning in routing the sound that was going to my speakers into the reverb using the VST output channel settings for the stereo out, but that means just one generic setting of reverb for all 8 of my tracks and i was hoping to have reverb control of each of the 7 tracks.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!!

    Best

If anyone is interested--the reason I am doing what i am doing now is that I have a childrens percussion group sponsored by the Chicago Symphony and we have orchestral arrangements of great music arranged for us.  Here is a link of our performance of Shostakovich symphony #10 using VSL samples that we did using cubase 3, and GVI from tascam--now a dead app which is why I am starting over it seams with VI

Here is a link to our website. go to videos and you will see other performances of my kids using samples live as backup to their performances.

  • It sounds like some knowledge of Cubase and its routing is needed, and I don't have that. -)

It seems to me you've got the right idea.  If it helps - in Reaper, I'd do this:

1.create a new track 'Y' to be my instrument audio track (Reaper doesn't care what 'kind' of track it is)

    2. go to the track with the VE, and tell it "send HW OUT X/X to track Y"

then I can do whatever I like to the audio on track Y - add a Reverb there, route it to another track/bus for reverb, send it to the Master out, etc.

    Does any of this help?

    Good luck!

    Larry

  • Thanks Larry for your quick reply. I agree with you that it is a cubase routing issue. I simply can't find a way for cubase to see any of the HW IN or HW out buses that vienna ensemble is using. I do appreciate your help though!!

I am hoping there is someone out there who uses cubase and can shed some light on my routing issues.

    Hello lyricperctimp

Let me first make clear first the difference between Vienna Ensemble and Vienna Instrument.

The Vienna Instrument (VI) is a sample player which is able to play the samples of the vienna libraries. It is a VSTi just as the other VSTis you got with cubase itself.

The meaning is that you open a VI for each miditrack.

    Example:

midi track "Violin" gets a VI with samples for the Violin

midi track "Flute" gets a VI with samples for the Flute

midi track "Trumpet" gets a VI with samples for the Trumpet

    etc.

Because the VI can't read different midi channel information you need to have the different instruments (violin - cello) separated.

After loading a Midi project within Cubase you shoud open a VI for each of these midi tracks.

If you have such VSTis (VIs) you can assign them to a midi track. So route the midi output to the corresponding VI.

Furhter you can create some "group channels". Call them Direct, Depth1, Depth 2, Depth 3,... for example.

Insert a Reverb into each of the "depth channels" with your desired depth/reverb.

You will be able to route now all the VIs through one of these group channels > The Violin through Depth1, the Flute through Depth2, ...

You see, you don't need the Vienna Ensemble so far.

The VE is a super VI so to say. It can host several VIs but the one VE is seen as one single VSTi by Cubase.

With VE you need to assign a midi channel information to each midi signal.

Within the VE you can manage which of the inserted VIs should play the midi information of a certain midi channel...

So far so good. Till now you have no more advantage with VE. Hosting VIs - that's a job which Cubase can do as well.

    So why using VE?

You can save a whole String Ensemble with all samples, pannings, EQings etc. in an easy way.

Do this for the Woodwinds and the Brass as well.

If you are going to save such sections you are able to arrange orchestras in a short time later on.

But I recommend still to solve the matter with the depths within the mixer of cubase.

So you are able to route several VEs through several depths.

You could insert the corresponding depth to each register directly within the VE. But maybe you like the Chamber Strings one day

in a room and the next day in a concert hall. So if you handle the room question outside VE you never had to go inside VE for changing

the depth - which is rather a business.

One last thing: I believe that the free VE 2.0 only accepts Suite Effects.

The advantage of VEPro is that you can start and load VEs within 3 differnt computers. They all are connected by LAN

Cubase (Main Computer) can catch VEs from 3 different computers so with samples from 3 computers and 3rd party instruments

from 3 computers... You can divide the needed power for playing a symphonic orchestra into 3 systems...

It accepts not only Suite Effects and Vienna Instruments and...

    Hope that helped a bit

More information about using the VI you will find here

All the best and a lot of success

The output busses from a VSTi are called VSTi Outputs. Look it up in the manual, and all will be clear.

  • Thanks DG.  My issue was that I needed to "turn on" those channels within Cubase.  I know it seems obvious but it took me a look time to discover how to do that and where they were!  Once I discovered that, I was able to direct the different channels coming out of VE into Cubase, route the sound into an insert for the individual reverbs, and all is great with the world!

I also want to thank Beat for taking so much time to help me understand what some of the basics are. To answer your question why I am using VE instead of simply keeping everything within Cubase--My midi info came from Finale Midi Files so I didn't need to input any data. Also, It seemed like using the expression maps available with Cubase 5.1 and VE seemed like a great time saver, so I decided to try that avenue.  I am a profession musician but NOT a keyboard player.  It has worked reasonable well but I realize that the special edition, even though it has the most common articulations, is not enough to get the sounds I am after.  All in all, I was really happy though.

As of now, all of my tech issues are solved and am justing trying to make music--what a relief!

Thanks to everyone  who helped me get started!

    All the best!

  • Hi, I'm having similar trouble to what you described. Could you tell me please how you went about 'turning on' such channels in cubase and where you found them? Thanks!

  •  F11 VST rack, little black triangle, just left of the Instrument name.

  • Thank you and sorry for the long wait in my saying thanks. Never got a notification that my post had been replied to. Luckily I figured it out after a while :)
