  • Stuck notes in Sibelius when Cell is transposed

    Hi VSL'ites,

I've noticed a problem when using Sibelius and the Solo String Sound Set (and tried emulating it with the Brass and Woodwind Soundsets where it does not seem to be happening). If the edit cell contains a transposition (as set up in the Soundset to trigger the harmonic tremolo in the Solo Strings (it's a workaround using the sul pont articulation to emulate the harmonic trem. sound)) then when playing this back in Sibelius the note hangs after its note value is finished. Pressing stop or reaching end of score stops the note. For the record I am using Sibelius 6 (latest version) with VE Pro build 4881. Any insights much appreciated.

    Thanks

  • Hello zentrumsounds!

Thanks for finding that. I could verify the problem and will talk with our programmers if we can do something about it. In the meantime I recommend the following workaround:

Make a Technique Text command with the following sytax:
    ~Oxx,64
This is a note off command in Sibelius. xx stands for the pitch:
    Middle C (C4) = 60; C#4=61; C5=72; ...
Put this command before the next articulation change in order to prevent a stuck note.

    Best,
    Andi

  • Thanks Andi! Yes that workaround is useful but given what I am working on ultimately a little OTT as it might require a very large amount of Technique Text entries. If a solution can be found via the programmers that would be very fine.

    Many thanks!

  • Incidentally, although not strictly a bug (rather perhaps an oversight when developing the samples?) is the fact that the range for the Solo String instruments' harmonic tremolo is not the same as for the normal harmonic articulations. This goes back to the same issue as the above in that no tremolo appear to have been recorded for harmonics (a shame) and the workaround (which sounds pretty good actually!) is to use the sul pont tremolo patch. However the sul pont patch does not have the same range as the normal harmonic patches so you have pretty limited range when using the tremolo harmonics. For me this is a real shame as I use this a lot in my music. I'm guessing that due to the fixed nature of the VSL system (i.e. the inability to add update samples to fill holes like this) that I'll not likely see a solution. Any ideas Andi???

    Thanks.

  • We didn't record tremolo harmonics. Using the sul ponticello tremolo instead seemed like the best solution for me. You are right, that this way the range is a bit more limited, but not by much. If you really want these highest harmonics, I guess you will have to do without the tremolo.

    Best,
    Andi
