Adding articulations/patches to presets - how?

Hello guys n gals!

I'm trying to add the portato articulation to my Orchestral Strings preset (the one that came with the soundset) and get this triggered in Sibelius by the 'tenuto' articulation sign.

I have dragged across the portato matrix (06 VI-14_perf-rep_por-fa) into a new cell after some of the perf-rep articulations, and also tried to replace one of the existing articulations by dragging and dropping over one of the existing cells.

It loads into the RAM but it still doesn't trigger in Sibelius.

My Sibelius dictionary says in 'Articulations' that the tenuto sign will trigger a Sound ID change:  +potato

But when I put the tenuto sign over a note it just plays the default sustain patch

How have othe peeps added the potato patch into their vast arsenal of articulations in Orchestral Strings??

Hi Ian!

Here is what you can do, to trigger the perf-rep_portato patches:

1.) Replace the C#0/2A cell (perf-rep_sta) with the perf-rep_portato patch and save the preset.
2.) Open the Orchestral Strings sound set with the Sibelius Sound Set Editor. You can download it from the Sibelius homepage.
3.) Go to Switch Types and change the +staccato.vibrato entry of "OrchestralStrings" and "OrchestralBassi" to +portato.
4.) Save the sound set. After that Sibelius has to be restarted.

Well I think I got it working just now! And then it didn't work the next time! I'll get there I'm sure! [:)]

Soooooo... just thinking of the not too distant future...

As I'm looking to build up my library (brass is next on my list! Yippee!) I'll be looking at getting the extended libraries.

Do you just replace loads of the samples in the soundset with the new available samples? I know there's the L2 soundset, but it looks like there's like waaay more samples in the extended library and they wouldn't all fit in, would they?

As if I replace all these samples with ones in the Soundset, I'm eventually going to be left with none of the original samples in my soundset. If you get my meaning...

How have other people using Sibelius got around this problem??

Excuse the question if it's obvious, as I don't presently own any of the extended libraries so can't have a play around - but I was thinking... (you must be able to hear the wooden cogs turning!) ...should I start to build up my own soundsets now? In ready for when I can afford my extended libraries??

Hi Ian!

When you get the extended content, you don't have to replace or reinstall anything. The sample content and the L2 presets for Sibelius are already installed.

As stated elsewhere, it's just not possible (or usable) to include all patches that come with our big instrument collections in the Sibelius presets. Such presets would take too much RAM. As a consequence only the patches which make most sense in a notation based context are included.

Of course you can always edit the presets and sound sets to your liking.

Sorry to bring this post up again.

I got the portato to work correctly by following your advice above - thank you!

But now I'm thinking... do I have to replace an existing articulation in the preset everytime I want to add a new articulation?

Can I not just keep on adding to, and build up my presets to include more articulations? I've plenty of RAM! (although I'll need more soon!)

My plan is to first buy all the standard libraries, then the extended libraries. But I can see how I might soon run into trouble by having to replace articulations that I don't want to replace!

And what about all the dynamic patches? How would I translate them to the Soundsets ?

PS Just so I don't have to bother you guys too much to take you away from developing new cool stuff, Is there a kind of guide for applying the VSL library to the soundsets in Sibelius?

Perhaps other VSL/Sibelius users have developed their own soundsets? Perhaps we could share??! [:)]  [:$] [*-)]

I also, would like to know if we could add more articulations to the soundsets, or have VERY large soundsets (maybe in addition to the smaller sets) for the cube owners, that have lots of RAM.

We hear you. ;-)

Please notice that VI presets for use with Sibelius that are even bigger than the currently available would only make sense on machines (or networks) with at least 16 GB RAM.

I'll just leave changing all the soundsets for now then - and get saving to buy the extended libraries and more RAM! :)
