  • What is the best way to notate VSL Jazz drums in Sibelius 6?

What is the easiest way to write rythms with "VSL Jazz drums" in Sibelius 6?

I mean the choice of the instruments, the number of staves, and related arguments.

  • Hello Sergio!

The Jazz Drums offer a big variety of articulations and have a complex mapping structure. It's not possible to use all the details of this collection with normal drum notation.

There are two ways you can use the Jazz Drums with Sibelius.

1.) The easier way: Just use the General MIDI VIFrames that came with the Jazz Drums and the General MIDI sound set. Now you can use the Jazz Drums with normal drum notation. Please notice that this way you can only use a small fraction of what the Jazz Drums are capable of.

If you want to enter CC1 data (mainly used for playing different zones of the drums), do it as Technique Text entries in the following format:
~C1,xx (xx stands for the value for CC1)

2.) The powerful way: Use the big VIFrames that came with the Jazz Drums and as sound set choose "(none)".
Create a new pitched instrument (House Style/Edit Instruments) with two staves and include that instrument in your score. Now you can trigger every sample according to the note it is mapped to. For details on the mapping please read the VI-DL_JazzDrumsBonus_Patch-Matrix-Preset manual. Entering CC1 data works as written above.

With the second way, you probably have to assign the Vienna Ensemble instance where you loaded the Jazz Drums in the Sibelius mixer to the Drum Set instrument.

    Best wishes,
    Andi
