Woodwind doublings and brass mutes i Sibelius

With the default soundset, (no comment on it's sound,) Sibelius elegantly changes from, say, clarinet to bass clarinet on the same staff. Is this as easy to do with the provided VSL/Sibelius presets, or do I have to try to make my own? It would also be great to have access to stopped and muted horn, and all other mutes for that matter, via technique text in the same effortless manner. Is this possible?

Yes, all of that is possible.

For the change from clarinet to bass clarinet, you will have to insert a Sibelius instrument change. Also make sure that one program and channel for each, clarinet and bass clarinet, is reserved on the manual sound sets page.

Stopped horn (or other muted instruments) can be triggered by adding "mute" or "con sordino" to your score. If you are working with the "VE Woodwinds + Brass" sound set, you will also have to reserve two programs and channels on the manual sound sets page for this.

Considering Sibelius difficulties to access one instrument more than once, wouldn't it be more elegant to have presets containing the most usual doublings on the same midi channel, like piccolo/flute/alto flute, oboe/english horn, and so on? It should not be worse than handling all the string articulations...

The same applies to mutes. If you have one midi channel per horn, and suddenly switch them all to the one channel of muted horn, Sibelius sometimes acts weird. I think it would be great to have all possibilities of what can happen in a staff on it's own reserved midi channel.

Maybe this is not possible for some reason, but you should give it some thought.

And, while I'm at it, would it be possible to make a script that sends layer 2 of a string staff to a second reserved midi channel?

You are talking about things how Sibelius handles playback. We at Vienna Symphonic Library have no influence on that. We tried our best to integrate our libraries as good as possible.

Normally it's no problem to use one instrument more than once. When a problem occurs (which normally is not the case if you have set up everything right), the hints in the troubleshooting section of the "Optimizing Sibelius Playback" manual will help you. Currently it is not possible to send tqwo layers of one staff to two different MIDI channels.
