  • Con Sordino v. Portamento in Sibelius strings

I'm having a consistent problem where the staff text "con sordino" is interpreted as "portamento".  Not sordino with portamento, just portamento.  It's occurred with orchestral violins, orchestral violas and orchestral cellos.  And not in just one place but throughout the score I'm working on.

The dictionary entry for con sordino appears correct: +Mute until next sound ID change.  The entry for portamento is +Portamento until next sound ID change.  I've tried fiddling with the portamento entry by changing it to until start of next note but it seems to have no effect.

The really odd thing is that I cannot recreate this in a simple newly created file.

Has anyone else experienced this?  I'm using Sibelius 6.1.0 with Vienna Special Edition and Special Edition Plus on Windows 7 (the problem also occurred with Vista so I've ruled out Windows 7 as the cause).  Thank you for your assistance.

  • Hello John!

Maybe you have mixed up the Special Edition PLUS sound set with a Special Edition matrix loaded in VE or vice versa.
The Special Edition sound set only work correctly with the Special Edition matrices and the SE PLUS sound set only works correctly with the SE PLUS matrices.

  • Does the SE PLUS sound set cover the SE +VE Plus?

I mean, if I use the SE and SE Plus samples together, SE PLUS sound set is enough, or do I have to use two different VE?

  • Hi Sergino!

The Special Edition articulations are also included in the Special Edition PLUS matrices. So, if you have both collections, you only need to use the SE PLUS sound set and the SE PLUS matrices.
