I struggled with this problem for several hours before finding a solution, so maybe the info will help someone else:
For some reason, Cubase 5 sometimes produce tens or hundreds of copies of the same articulation change in the MIDI data stream. It created a problem in a track I'm working on - the track would suddenly freeze during playback at the same point every time. When I looked at the MIDI data, it was trying to send thousands of "Text" data values (whic Cubase uses for the articulation data) at the same time, so it was locking up playback.
I've been using VST Expression for quite a while and this is the first time I've noticed a serious problem. I looked back through some old projects and found the same thing but they didn't cause a problem. However, those projects used older versions of VE (both hardware and network connection), so I think it might be specific to VE Pro.
At any rate, there's no reason for Cubase to produce hundreds of copies of the same MIDI data. For whatever reason, older versions of VE seemed to be OK with it but VE Pro has trouble.
The fix is simply to deleate all the duplicate data values associated with the atriculation change. It seem like it happens mostly on regions where I have cut and pasted MIDI data.
