How do you smooth volume differences?

Hello, I am wondering whether you know about a VST-Plugin that planes the differences in volume of an VI while using the same Midi velocity.

I am not quite sure, if I could make myself understood.

I am looking for a tool (plug-In), which

a) dampens a sound when the sound's volume exceeds a certain lmit, AND

b) enhances a sound when the sound's volme is underneath a certain limit.

Does someone have a suggestion?

With dampening / enhancing you mean frequency dependant processing rather than simple volume processing (if I understand you correctly) - because for that latter case a compressor _is_ the tool of choice.

For frequency-dependant volume changes a multiband dynamic processor like Vienna Suite's Multiband Limiter is what you're looking for.

ad 1 and 2: That would be a compander (i.e. a compressor combined with an expander). Waves C1 in its "Comp-Gate"-variety is a typical example, but there might be others, too.

ad 3: ... I am not sure that I understand what you are after. You mean automation?

Yes. So that I can change the settings of the compander during playback via midi.

In Vienna you use the "dyn" control..worx great...

Other than that you have just defined what a compressor does.
