    First off let me say that I love the entire library and the attention paid to the quality of the stereo samples.

    However I have found that in some cases I get better control of spacial placement by taking mono outputs from individual vsl instruments and then processing them with outboard equipment. So I have the following questions:

    1. Am I better off summing both left and right into one channel, or taking just one of the two?

    2. It seems that some stereo samples have completely different sample info in L and R (horns a4?). Is that true? If so which instruments have separate sample information in L and R? and which overlap?

    3. What kind of processing have they been through if any? (and if it is not a secret!). It sounds to me that some samples, especially strings have been through a very short delay, or it could be a result of how they were miked. They sound great by the way!

    I would really appreciate it if someone from VSL could answer these questions. It is very useful information for those doing any further processing.

     Hi mkapou,

    for all of our instruments  both channels are equal important. If you hear any volume differences in the brass sections, than for example a brass player on the left side performed a certain tone louder, therefor the left side could be louder.

    Generally it's a good idea to make the stereo width smaller, especially for solo intstruments and smaller sections.

    If you don't do that, than the horn section is spread over the whole width of your virtual soundstage. If the stage is 20 meters width,

    than the space between each of the 4 players is approximate 5 meters.

    To achieve the best results is to use powepanning instead of normal panning (or even worse switching off left or right channel).

    Using powerpanning you won't loose any audio informations. Powerpanning is implemented in some sequenzers, of course also in our hosting software Vienna Ensemble and Vienna Ensemble PRO, and there are also dedicated powerpanning plugins, which offer more control. Such a power panning plugin is also included in our Vienna Suite bundle.

     Why can't I get the power pan window (mask)  larger?

    Hi Herb,

    Thanks for the response. I use power panning a lot in VE pro and it works great. However my questions in my initial post is regarding the cases where I want to use an instrument in mono so it can go out of the DAW in a single channel for outside processing.
