    Hi

    If I play a long note using a legato matrix, the note dies after about 10 seconds.  Fore some reason, if I repeat the note, it doesn't extend it, it just dies a second or two later as if there is a fixed length envelope which will only let a note on the same key play for a finite period.

    Basically, how do I get a long held note to play for longer than a standard legato patch normally allows one to?

    There are three sorts of notes in the legato patches:

    1. Start notes
    2. Legato notes, which include the transition material
    3. Repeat notes

    It's the second of these that you are finding too short. There are two things that you can do:

    1. Keyswitch to a sustain
    2. Cut the preceding note short, cover the gap with the sustain pedal and then play the next note (which will force a start note, which is longer)

    Thanks DG. 

    I had to use a sustain  - no matter what I did with the legato patches (any of them, including repeats, sustains, gaps with sustains in them, gaps with sustains on and off in them) I could not get a held note to sustain beyond the normal legato note length.

    If you send me a MIDI file and details about what patch (assuming I have the same Collections) I'll have a look at it and see if I can come up with any better solution, if you like.

    Hi DG

    That's very kind of you, I really don't want to put you to any trouble.

    All I'm after is a long held solo violin note - it has to play for about 20 seconds so I can fade very gradually.  If I use the normal solo violin legato patch the note dies after about 10 seconds.  As I say, nothing I do seems able to extend it.  The fixed sustain articulation is working fine though, so as I've got a workaround it's no longer critical.

     Yes, 20 seconds would be too long for this articulation.

    What Daryl suggests is:

    - play a legato phrase

    - before the last note of the legato phrase ends, hold the sustain pedal and play _the same note again_ .

    - Now the effect will be much like a bow-change, but newly triggered note is _not_ a legato-sample and will sustain forever 😊

    Dietz, DG - all clear now.

    The new note doesn't quite sustain forever, but it does mean I can keep repeating it using this method ... forever if necessary.

    There is no simple answer. I use whatever works best for the moment. Some instruments work well using sustains. However, for some instruments, the sustains sound so different from the legatos, that it won't work. This is one reason why I like to have the majority of samples loaded in my template, because trying different things is immediate, and I don't have to waste time loading new stuff.

    That's what I found but wasn't sure how to get around it.  I will diffidently will be trying #2 in the future.  Thats for the suggestion.  Yes, I agree with you on having most sounds in the template.  I set up a large template in Cubase and have all matching VST Expressions with keyswitches assigned so I can quickly audition.  The only problem now is, even with the MacPro, there are so many articulations in VSL that I still have to pick the most common ones or run the risk of running out of memory.  It is much better now with VE-PRO though, that at least I can have a much larger template than before.......
