  • Cant get VEP to work reliably on a remote Mac

After more than one week of struggling with the new setup I threw in the towel and went back to a Midi and audio connection of my slave Mac.

The setup never worked more than a few hours. Today, no matter what I tried out (Buffer size, thread count, even different Logic versions), Logic locked up when playing more than 4 notes (!) on the remote Mac. (Mac System 10.6.1 on both computers. One 8 core, one 4 core, gigabit Ethernet over a switch)

Other times it was crackles and drop out city. They went away if I changed the buffer size. From 2 to one to zero and back - didn´t mattter. it worked for a few minutes, then broke down again. (Note: It was downright impossible when BOINC or Compressor was running anywhere on my network)

Having VEP on my main Mac with System 10.6.1 basically - mostly - works. And is a huge bonus. But opening a connection to the slave Mac makes the master Mac very crashy.

Sorry to say this. Huge potential. Hope it works soon. Happy to give more info.

    All the best,

    Jochen

  • HI Josch,

    thanks for the report!

Feel free to send a detailed description of your setup, the used plug-ins, versions of your software and of course crashlogs, screenshots and a reliable way to reproduce this behaviour to support [at] vsl [dot] co [dot] at, so that we can look into it.

  • Did that, thank you.

Unfortunatly, the latest beta did not solve the problem with any remote connection on my system.

Whats odd too is that the 32bit instance on my main Mac works fine until I open the connection to the 2nd Mac. Then I get 1 second periodic glitches in - for example - a sustained sound on the main Mac.

The remote Mac is still unusable.

    Hmm....

    All the best,

    Jochen

  • Hi Jochen,

sorry to hear that. Did you try to leave your switch out of your setup and connect you slaves directly to find our what´s going on?

    Best,

  • Periodic glitches of 1 second sounds very much like something is either interrupting on the network itself, or some software (driver or similar) which interrupts one of the computers network connections periodically, causing a periodic peak latency in network transfers . It could be a variety of different things really... Reinstalling the slave system is the first thing that comes to my mind, unless you know how to properly disable drivers and kernel extensions manually.

  • I´ve tried to nail down the culprid with a Netmonitor. I have found that my Apogee Ensemble and its Maestro software is causing quite some traffic on my Ethernet 2 (the "Vienna-Ethernet") while being connected to my Euphonix MC Mixes and Controls on the MacPro´s Ethernet port 1.

Is there a problem with using VEP with the Apogee Ensemble and the Euphonix desks? Other users with the same config here?
