Vienna Suite - will I be able to use all the facilities ?

Hi,  being a teacher, I'm sorely tempted to take advantage of the current 35% Special Discount offer and buy the Vienna Suite.  However, since I have the SE Standard and Extended Libraries ( and Elements ) ONLY, I'm wondering whether I'll be able to use much of the dazzling faciities of the Vienna Suite.

My current set-up is:

iMac,1 Intel Core 2 Duo, 2.4 GHz, 4 GB RAM,   Mac OS X (10.4.11) - Tiger,    Logic Studio 8, Ivory, VSL Standard+Extended, Vienna Ensemble 2, Bolder Sounds, Apogee Duet.

I've been reading in the forum and seen posts where differences between 32-bit and 64-bit make problems, and wondered whether this and possibly other details might affect usage.

I'd appreciate your opinions.

There is absolutely no problem in using the 32 bit versions of the plug ins.

To use the 64 bit versions on the other hand, you need to upgrade  to "Leopard" at least and use a host which is capable of handling 64 bit audio units (like Vienna Ensemble Pro).

But you get all the features in the 32 bit version as well...

There are various meanings for 64bit, but in this case the answer to your question is no. the advantage is the ability to use more memory for applications.

Which means smoother, faster working quality, doesn't it ?

Of course, I could update Tiger, and the OS too, but I stayed put simply because of the fear that I wouldn't cope if there were problems with  my apps ( in particular Logic ).  I've read many sad tales in Apple forums, and I'm not as computer savvy as many   ............ though I learn fast !

"Tiger" is the "OS". Yes, you'll have to update to 10.5 (leopard) or 10.6 (snow leopard). But as I already told you, you can't use the 64 bit plug ins in Logic. And you can't use them in your VE 2 (as far as I know), because these applications aren't 64 bit ready. maybe Logic 10 will be....[|-)]    ...or Logic 25...

Nice to meet you here.

I'm happy to publish the Tutorial 2009 within the next days (unfortunately for most of the poeple here: It is the German Version for the first).

I only used the Vienna Suite Effects for showing how to do the Audio-Mix within this Tutorial... and I used all of them for the mixes. 

You can pan the instruments to its place with the POWER PANNER

You can filter bad frequencies with the MASTER EQ

You can form your own sound with instruments or cut frequencies with the EQ

You can increase the power of drums, percussion- and brass- instruments with the MULTIBAND Limiter

You can limit the signals on each track with the LIMITER

You can compress brass, woodwinds and percussion, so that they have the power to sound strong enough behind the strings - using the COMPRESSOR

And finally you can use the CONVOLUTION Reverb to design nice Concert Halls with different depths for all the instrument sections.

I really only used SUITE effects beside the dithering effect (which has nothing to do with the sound) for reducing 32Bit to 16Bit > mp3.

Further: Click on the image "Mixer of Amazing Grace" within the Sidebar on my homepage. If projects do have that size then you need effects which are CPU-friendly.

And: If effects are used so often you get  a muddy and non-transparent sound with "lowcost" effects. Listen to "Amazing Graze" or to the "Bach Fuge": The clarity coulden't be better.

So this Effect SUITE is worth every cent, sure.

Perhaps it seems tobe, that I am the seller of this SUITE - it isn't [:)]

Yes- I haven't been here for awhile. I had a couple of eye operations which made life rather different for a time. Thanks for going into such detail.  

I was interested in the Suite when it was first announced, but an acquaintance who's a sound engineer told me that since I worked with Logic 8, which has it's own EQ's, Limiters etc and the Space Designer, which may not be as brilliant as the Suite reverb but is also convolution reverb, he thought it wasn't really necessary to purchase that as well.

I know that you work with Cubase - which is probably very like Logic in quality, simply a different system, so how do you feel about such an idea ?  With my lack of technical background it's really great that I can 'ask the experts' here in this forum.

Hope you are well now and all the operations helped in the end...

The  advice of the sound engineer is a good one > It isn't really necessary to purchase the SUITE.

Logic contains enough effects to get similar or equal results as you can have with the SUITE.

A main difference is, that not all of those Logic Effects are so useful.

Take the POWERPANNER.

It is very easy to set the "Zuschauer-Blickwinkel" of an instrument with it...  and the position of your instrument is given in the mix.

With Logic you have to fiddle around with the stereo balance and the DirMixer.

OK! It could be that you get the same result...

Further: The SUITE comes with a lot of presets for all the instruments which are really useful.

But once more: It isn't really necessary to purchase the SUITE - that's correct.

So it seems to be a  question of having the money for a sweet second car for more (another?) fun while driving or not.

Perhaps you better need the money for buying one full string library. I really don't know, Kay.

Another way could be to work with LOGIC until the day you are no more happy with the results.

The answer...

Even if the effects in Cubase 5.1 (LOGIC?) are really better than with earlier versions the VSL SUITE effects are better.

They also are more tailor-made for the use with the VSL-Samples (presets).
