  • VE Pro, Logic and Automation

    Hi

I am trying to understand the best way to mix via VE Pro within Logic.

I've set up a complete orchestral template and within that I have ended up using multi output instruments within logic and having two channels for each instrument, one for it's audible output and the other for it's midi (via a multitimbral instrument).

I don't find that moving faders in VE pro I can assign them to any midi command, so in logic the monitor object shows no data at all attached to the internal VE mix faders. This means that I couldn't automate a mix without instruments as described above. Unless i misunderstand, this renders mixing in VE Pro almost impossible - as the faders are just set at a starting level and the mix is done in the DAW via multi outputs.

Is there a more elegant solution that i am missing?

  • You can automate Volume and Pan for each channel of VE Pro directly in Logic - I sent you a screenshot by email!

  • Got it and all understood! Thanks for this.

The reason it wasn't doing what i wanted was this...
The automatin slot for the master reads  "ch 1" but my instrument which is on ch1 is in the 1st instrument slot and comes up under ch2 volume.

I was getting only a global response because I was trying to send data on channel one and it moves the master - which controlled my whole section in one go.

When i stop and think about it Track based automation is not MIDI channel sensitive, so it couldn't have related to a midi channel, but I still find the words ch2 to mean 1st instrument a bit confusing... I suppose you need overall control over the whole master from the first slot!!!

Thanks for that - I had rigged up a multi, added a transformer, changed midi cc7 to midi cc11 to avoid global data for the whole instrument - all of this unecessary... oh well!!

    Thanks again.

  • Actually there is one more question...
I have the Vienna Suite to use for compression, reverb etc - but many of my students use logic internal plugins.

Am i right in thinking that if they want to use these plugins independently on a multitimbral VE setup, they have to output these to separate tracks in logic as the plugins are proprietry only and don't show up in the VE list.

    Is this correct?

  • Yes!
