  • VE Pro Preserved Instance Samples Don't Load in 64bit Server

    Hello Forum,

I am using a demo version of VE Pro to see if I want to buy it. Right now I am having an issue with my patches/samples not being re-loaded into the 64bit server when I re-open the preserved instance. The whole setup is there but no loaded samples. However, when I switch over to the 32bit server and load the same instance, all of the samples are there. I've downloaded the most recent version of the VI software. Is the problem that the software is 32bit and VE pro is 64bit? If so, is there a 64bit version of the software for Mac. I've got 16 gigs of Ram and would love to put it to use more effectively.

    As always, thanks.

    Processor: 4 x 2.5 GHz PPC G5

    Memory: 16 GB  DDR2 SDRAM

    Software: Logic 9

    Hi chumley,

preserving is a feature that disconnects your VE PRO instance from your sequencer (and makes it "feel" like a standalone VE PRO). This way you can keep your setup loaded and switch to the next cue, then reconnect to your preserved session - without reloading any samples.

Of course VE PRO is also 64 bit on OS X, so you can load as many samples in 64 bit sample players, like the Vienna Instruments, as possible. Start your VE PRO Server (64 bit), insert VE PRO in your sequencer and connect to this instance.

Create your template, then preserve it and it will stay open and available when you open your next song/cue - you just need to connect to it via the VE PRO Server Interface.

Did you check out our videos yet? I have done my best to make the process easy to follow.

    Best,

    Paul

  • Thanks Paul,

That clears things up a bit. I did watch the video tutorials but missed a step. I'll keep playing around with it a bit and get back to the forum.

    Thanks again.

  • chumley,

I made a similar post ( http://community.vsl.co.at/forums/t/22887.aspx ) but received no answer from the VSL Team. There definitely seems to be something wrong with saving and reopening 64 bit instances on a mac ppc...

  • fs,

It seems that the problem may lie in the fact that Logic 9 and mac OSX is not 64 bit yet. Crazy!! I've been doing a little research and all I can come up with is that OSX is not 64 bit, Logic 9 is not 64 bit. I am using a Digi 002 as my audio interface so that I can go between Protools and logic and Digidesign doesn't currently make anything that supports 64 bit. So, unless I'm missing something (and if I am, please someone set me straight)  it would make sense to me that the reason the VE Pro 64 bit server is unstable, i.e. crashes and/or doesn't save pre-loaded samples, is because of the lack of 64 bit compatibility and support.

It's unfortunate, I have 16 GB of Ram and I can't use it to load up on Vienna Instruments. If this is indeed the reason then I feel really betrayed by Apple and Digidesign. What's the hold up? Windows seems to be rolling out a 64 bit format.

Vienna Instruments should work in the 64bit server. n othing else will, unless it is 64bit.

The reason that 64bit is only just happening on OSX is down to Apple and their change of mind regarding Cocoa and Carbon.

  • I can't believe that version 8 of Pro Tools didn't offer a 64 bit app but I'm really suprised Logi 9 didn't. I don't know much about Macs but on my PC I can load a huge VE Pro 64 bit template and still use a 32 bit server (Cubase 5.1).

Not quite. You are using a 32bit host (Cubase) and the 64bit server of VE Pro. [;)]

What you have to remember is that there is not much point in a 64bit sequencer on OSX when there are virtually no 64bit plugs or sample players. it's a bit chicken and egg, but I would imagine that the next versions of all Mac sequencers will probably offer a 64bit option.

For me,l I don't use the 64bit version of Nuendo, because I can run everything that I want in the 32bit version, using VE Pro for my 64bit sample players. Also until Apple manages to program a 64bit version of Quicktime (how hard can that be?) there is no point in moving to 64bit.

  • DG,

OK, so I'm back to the problem being with the VE Pro 64 bit server. I just ran another test and one of two things always happens.

    1) After I open the server I create a new instance of VE. I load it up with samples. Sometimes VE will freeze while loading a sample and then I have to force quit. After that, VE pro will not launch and instead, will crash while opening. The only way to fix this is to restart the computer.

    2) If I can successfully load all of the samples I want to use then the next problem is that VE Pro 64bit won't save the samples I loaded. If I save the instance and close out of VE Pro and then re-open it, the template with all of the prober labels loads but the samples don't load and I then have to go back and re-load all of the samples.

When I use the 32 bit server none of these issues arise and it works fine. I obviously just can't load as many samples and load them as fast. Any thoughts?

    Thanks again, Chumley

    chumley,

thanks for your reply, but the above statment is not entirely true...

Logic 9 isn't 64 bit yet, but OSX (snow leopard (10.6) and even leopard (10.5)) are able to handle 64 bit apps. that's why i have no problems in using the 64 bit instances of VE Pro on my G5 PPC slave (OS 10.5.8). No crashes at all! The only thing I'm not able to do is - as mentioned by you in case 2 - loading the saved samples again. So this has to be a ppc issue as VE Pro is supposed to work on OS 10.5.8 (latest OS to install on a non intel mac). Sadly there's not much we can do, as VSL doesn't support this plattform.

The very odd thing is, that it almost works. Except this save and reload thing...

That's why I wanted to find out, if there are any G5 ppc users, who can save and reload samples. But apart from you , I haven't received any answers, which still makes me think that there are people out there who can use the 64 bit version without any problems with the old macs....

    cheers

Just a quick question? Why are you creating the instances is VE Pro server, and not within a project in Cubase?

  • fs,

You're right and I do stand corrected. I am using OSX 10.5.8 and I use Stylus RMX and that is 64 Bit.

As to my first issue, I removed, re-added and re-scanned all of the vienna samples in the directory manager and so far it seems to have helped.

As far as issue two, like you said, everything seems to work except the save and re-loading thing. It would be great to get a little confirmation and/or help from the Vienna team on this. Time is ticking and I'm trying to decide if I'm going to buy VE Pro or not. As cool as the preserve feature is, the main reason I would buy it is for the 64bit capabilities.

    Thanks

  • What I do until further notice: I saved a fully loaded metaframe of the 64 bit version. In the morning, this empty but prepaired template gets loaded. Then I'll manually load the corresponding VSL presets (=multiple matrixes). This takes about 1 minute to get done. Then i'll have my coffee and let the samples load. This will bring me trough the day. (talking about PRESERVED instances here. So, "load and lock" is the key)

Still, would be nice if this last but very important percent of the whole thing would work!

Don't know, if hoping for an answer from VSL is a good idea (as it is not supported). But a little user feedback  would be nice!

  • DG,

Well, I use Logic 9 and was having all of the issues mentioned above when I was within a Logic project and so, to make sure that it wasn't Logic that was the problem, I decided to only have VE Pro running. Whether I have the server running or  just have the VE Pro 64Bit standalone open, the samples don't re-load.

In a post above a user is having the same issue and has suggested that maybe this is a PPC non intel Mac issue.
