  • Strings in "Adventures on Earth" MIR

    What strings were used in Jay Bacal's production of John Williams score on the MIR demo??

  • If you import the MIDI file into your sequencer, the tracks are named with all the instruments used.  The articulations would only be known if you had MIR......

    From what I see, he used a combination of Solo, Chamber, Orchestral and Appassionata.....  90 Tracks total.

    95% is Appassionata strings with a small amount of solo strings layered to varying amounts on top.  Occassionally I used Orchestral strings to add "blurring" to fast runs and to fill in some articulation gaps in the Appassionata package.   The Chamber Strings were hardly used at all and if I removed them entirely no one would notice.

    So as far as purchases are concerned I would recommend you buy the Appassionata and Solo packages first.  

    Now maybe you can keep your car.   [;)]

  • Phew... thanks Jay, I'm glad to hear this coming directly from you.  I looked at the midi file and it was textured extremely dense for certain groups like the strings and the trumpets.  You had the fanfare, the trumpet a3, and the solo trumpets all playing together at times.. did this make a big difference compared to just having fanfare or a3 alone?  (Do the solo instruments help punctuate phrases to come through the mix better?)

    I was trying to look for a website or something with your music and had no luck--do you have one?

    I am glad to have all the VSL trumpets -- the  fanfare, the trumpet a3, and the solo trumpets (and on some projects even the cornet).   They all can be helpful at different points in the music.  I was originally surprised by just how different the Bb solo and the C solo trumpet sound from each other.  The C trumpet is often brighter, brassier and cuts through more on the high fff notes.   The Bb trumpet is a bit darker and in fact is what Williams calls for in the score.   If I had to pick only 2 I would choose the trumpets a3 and the solo in C.  

    I'm a fan of layering.   It adds some randomization to the unison notes and highlights certain tonalities.
