  • Sibelius Articulations change unquestioned

Hi again Since a few launches of VSL in Sibelius I recognized a strange problem which is very annoying: In my string quintet arrangement I've got two violins (1 and 2) with of course two different instruments in VE. Now every time the second violin plays a legato passage, its automatically by violin 1. All other articulations are played normally and correctly. Its weired because it worked for a few weeks without any problems and I didn't change a thing... I know I did have a similar Problem and I also checked the pdf manual about optimizing the playback in sibelius. Best balz

  • Hello balz!

There is a playback bug in Sibelius which sometimes occurs when the same instrument is used more than once. Normally, it helps to create a new version of the problematic instrument, cut out the content of the old instrument and paste it into the new one.
If this doesn't help, try the following: Go to the Sibelius mixer and reassign the sound ID (third line in the mixer) of the instrument which doesn't switch correctly. If you use the same sound ID more than once, be careful to assign it in the right order: for example, the first line with "strings.violin" for the first violin and the second line with "strings.violin" for the second violin.

If these solutions don't work, I guess there is a mistake in your setup somewhere. Does your score include instrument changes? Does everything but legato switch correctly?

  • hi andi thanks once againg for your quick answer and help. You mean to create a new version of the problematic instrument in VE? I didn't find out how to copy the content of an instrument, but I just created a new one (similar to the problematic one) and assigned the midi channel. Same problem as before. Then I reassigned the Sound IDs like you said in the Sibelius Mixer. Like that it worked again, meaning that everything the problematic instrument has to play would come from the same instrument in VE. BUT: now the articulation won't change at all. Now everything is played in staccato and if I manually switch to lets say sustain, everything is played in sustain... Technique Texts like "arco" didn't work, except for tremolos - this is the only message that makes the instrument change its patch. No, my score has no instrument changes and yes, before everything but legato changed correctly. But as I said, I worked on that score for several weeks without any problem at all, so I'm wondering what playback mistake we could speak of in my sibelius playback... best balz

  • Hello Balz!

Please try to recreate the Sibelius instrument (not the instrument in VE). Then cut and paste the content. Sorry if that was not clear enough.

    I hope that helps.

  • OMG, I'm now fine again with the first two violins, but now the viola seems to have exactly the same problem - so it has just been dragged "one staff down". Here it doesn't help if I create a new instrument in sibelius and paste the content. The viola just plays on one articulation and is not changable.... I'm becoming desperate about this, because it worked so well and I worked a lot with it and now its just not working anymore... best, balz

  • Hello Balz!

Can you tell me exactly which instruments are in your score and which programs you have chosen on the Manual Sound Sets page?

  • Hi Andi! As I was very desperate, I tried to do it one last time, and - magic - it worked finally! I have really NO Idea why the instruments change correctly again, I did nothing specific like at the time VE began to behave weird... Now I've only the problem that Sibelius crashes everytime I want to load a film, but I guess that's none of your business. :-) Thanks very much for your great help! balz

  • Hi Balz!

Thanks for your feedback. I'm glad, that it works now.
I don't know what the problem with the film could be. If it persists, maybe you'd like to contact the Sibelius support team.
