  • VE Pro on PPC: Who is using and how well does it work?

    Hello everyone,

I heard that VE Pro WORKS on PPC Macs!! VERY COOL!! THANK YOU VSL TEAM!!

However, it seems to only work in Leopard, and since I'm still on 10.4.11 I'm unable to test it. So I was wondering from other PPC users, how well does it work? Since its technically "unsupported" by VSL I'm unsure how well it actually works. Are you able to run VE Pro as a standalone instance outside the DAW on your main system without any problems? How about using other PPC macs as slaves?

I've experienced MAJOR slowdowns in Logic when loading RAM intensive 3rd party instruments like Kontakt, and loading them in stand alone instances outside of logic solves this issue; but VE pro would provide a much more elegant solution! Since I'm running 10.4.11 I'm unable to test VE pro on my PPC system, and since my only reason to upgrade to leopard would be for VE Pro, I would love to hear if it actually functions well on PPC macs. Thanks in advance for your reply, and thanks again VSL team for making VE Pro PPC compatible! VERY COOL!!!

  • Works Great on PPC G5 Quad. Have not had any real issues. Tested on OSX 10.5.7

Thats great to hear! is the PPC G5 your main daw too, or is this a slave mac?

  • Yes, Right now (didn't have time to setup the 8 core yet) I'm using the quad as main DAW with Cubase 4.5.2. I have tested the VEP locally on the G5 as well as on the 8 core as a slave. Both ways worked like a charm. I had an issue with using an Incompatible hub a while ago, but that has been resolved now.

  • I'm using a Dual 2.7GHz PPC 7Gb RAM as master (Pro Tools HD) and an 8 core (16GB RAM) Intel Mac as slave. Works very nicely. I also tried an identical PPC (4Gb RAM though) as a slave and that was definitely struggling - enough to encourage me to go out and buy a v cheap (as in Aldi cheap!) quadcore PC on Saturday. Have yet to test the PC but need to experiment more with the PPC slave as there may well be some latency settings etc that I can change which will get it up to speed as a convincing slave. In fact if anybody else has discovered some suitable stings please post! In the meantime I will continue to experiment. One thing I am unclear about: when I open an instance of VEP in PTools the main GUI (not the small one with buffer settings etc) loads on the slave computer only and not on the host machine. Of course, I can access this using Apple remote desktop but it would be nice if all the relevant slave GUIs were visible from within the master environment. Is this just a PPC thing or a feature on all platforms?

  • The GUI launches on the slave machines, for all OS's and all DAWs.  Make remote desktop your friend.  I have been doing that for as long as VE3 has been out and it works great.
