  • Help...fire wire problem

    Hi Everyone,

I posted this problem earlier but I still have not been able to resolve it. Please help if you can , or let me know if you have had a similar experience.

I bought a fire wire external drive with the Oxford 911 chipset to house my new vsl library. My win98se system sees the drive but under drives in the device manager I had to add a check next to "removable" in order for windows 98se to show the disk. I can load files from this drive into Giga but only thru the file menu in Giga. The drive does not show up in the onscreen navigation pane in giga. Also, the box under advanced in the sound tree parameters is greyed out for that drive's letter. This all leads to the most significant problem; after I create a Giga performance and save it using VSL instruments from the various basic instruments in vsl, I can't get them to load back up properly. Instead of the individual instruments I loaded into the various midi slots I get "BASIC INSTRUMENT" in every slot. If any one can help I would really appriciate it.

  • I can only respond to your performance load problem.
One user had similiar problems, which were solved with an update on version 2.53.

    best wishes

I briefly had that problem, but in my case, I think it was because the MIDI interface wasn't communicating properly with the computer. I repowered and rebooted and it went away. If it returns, I'll have to investigate it further.

Regarding Firewire, since it's fairly recent, perhaps it would be a good idea to upgrade your OS to XP. I don't know this for a fact, but I would think that the Firewire implementation in XP would be better.

  • there has been a fix for problems regarding W98SE and storage over firewire

is the direct link - unfortunately neither the supporting descriptive page is still available nor does this patch show up in any search on the microsoft site
also make sure, you don't have some proprietary firewirecontroller on your motherboard/expansion card - if so, try to get the latest driver from the manufacturer (eg. lynx-controllers are known to cause problems)

  • finally i found a newer version of the supporting page

be careful: the page, which is mentioned there to have the download has severe javascript-errors - take the link i posted before instead

  • Thank you all for the time and thought you have put into this problem, I really am very greatful. Unfortunatly a solution has not yet been reached, I had already downloaded the update from Microsoft so unfortunatly, that is not the problem. I really do appriciate the brain storming though so if there are any other thoughts I would welcome them.

    Thanks again,
    Scott
