  • VEPro - Multi Preserve?

Hi Vienna-team and friends of it,

is it possible to preserve all instances at once? If I have to preserve every instance separately this function palls. Is it planned to extend this function, e.g. a "Multi Preserve" in the server-window?

    Best regards, Peter

  • You can't be serious to say "this feature palls" after such a great feature comes out just because it will take you 5-10 seconds more time to preserve your windows lol.

You obviously haven't felt the pain of a 20-40GB template with no preserve ability.  That is what "palls".

  • Here's something else to think about.  Say they do "mass preserve" and you have 6 VE Pro windows.  Now when you go to your new project and try to connect to one of them, how are you going to know which of the windows you want to connect to of the 6 since you wanted it all done in one push of one button?

Perhaps you could give them a suggestion on how to accomplish that?

    Hi cgernaey,

regarding your reaction I guess the word "pall" has a different meaning from that I was looking for in my online-translation. I only wanted to ask politely if the "Preserve-function" works that way it could optimizing my workflow? I'm sorry, if I have offended your sensibilities.

I have some very large projects with more than 50 instruments in the VST-rack. I hoped that with the preserve-function I can save all instruments at once and then easily switch to a different project (with exactely the same instruments) and use them all without reloading. But when I understand it right, it doesn't work as easily as I was hoping for, because I have to press a lot of buttons.Or is there anything I don't understand?

Anyway, VEPro has a lot of another advantages it was worth waiting for it.

    Best regards,

    Peter

  • I also do understand your original question, because the DAY before VEPro released (and I was waiting patiently!) I had just finished setting up a large template that replaced 7 gigastudios on seperate PCs, with just ONE mac using bidule and VE2, and Kontakt. I was waiting for VEPro of course, but had to get going as setting it up took at least a week of careful setup and I had a deadline for a film project to start with this.

I ended up with a large bidule setup, with Kontakt instances and VE2, East West Play etc inside bidule, under ReWire for use with DP6, all on one Mac.

I got it working great, though I had to extend from using only bidule under rewire, to also using 3 instances standalone of VE2 to get everything I needed, and these were handled audio wise via physical audio adat loop back (2408, Banks B and C which I previously wasn't using). I also had to add a standalone instance of Kontakt (which thankfully has 4 midi pots (16 channelsx4) to handle everything.

One neat thing about all this is that when I open and close cues in DP6 (and I use a seperate project for every cue, it has to be this way for reasons I won't go into), the template remains the same, no reloading of anything and no disconnect or connect buttons, nor is there any need for "preserve" features. The standalone VE2s and Kontakts sit in the background and work without any of that needed.

Then VEPro came out the very next day. In my case I experimented (remember I'm only using one Mac) and found that VEPro has only one port per instance in DP (AU) so I'd have to load a number of them in DP as a plugin if I went this way, and be sure to keep an eye on "preserve" features when switching between cues / projects in DP. I'm actually tempted at this point to keep my "old" set up because there's no need to worry about that, although VEPro instances (as a plug in) would offer me more audio channel options.

A long way of saying I see where you are coming from, as when you end up with about 60 cues for a film and you open and close them a lot on certain days, it's just an extra thing to keep an eye on that I was wondering about avoiding. I've since heard the VST and RTAS versions of VEPro don't have this limitation, so you wouldn't need as many plug in instances in that case, but my DP system is AU.

(Note this entire experiment is very specific to the use of one machine for both sequencer and VEPro. When it comes to wanting to use an extra computer, that's where VEPro truly blows everything out of the water and demonstrates just how completely revolutionary it is. I'm not forgetting that!)

  • @Rob: thanks for your answer. This sounds like a lot of work ;-)

    @all:

Damn, it's so easy. VE Pro is such a brilliant tool, but I'm too stupid to understand the manual. Forget anything about the "Preserve"-Button.You don't need it if you do it like this way (Cubase):

    1. Open VE Pro Server before you start your sequencer.
    2. Add as many instances as you need in your song-templates and load the VST-instruments in the VE Pro Server Interface.
    3. Now open a project in Cubase, load for every instrument a "Vienna Ensemble Pro"-VSTi and connect it with the server instances.
    4. Play and enjoy ;-)
    5. When you want to load a new project (with the same instruments) just close the Cubase-project. There's no need to press the "Preserve"-Button. The instruments will stay in ram anyway.
    6. Open a new project and use the instruments which still are in the "VE Pro Server" window.

Thanks a lot Vienna-Team - your software rocks!

    Best regards,
    Peter

  • Peter,

You know the funny thing is I realized this a little while ago when they released a brand new version of VE3.  I noticed that once the projects opened up once, the next time they opened they opened in 3-4 seconds.  I thought what the hell is going on?  Then I realized it had probably to do with the new pro engine design.  Still it does have its definite advantages.  Especially if you're starting a new project etc.  You can preserve a few windows, and then connect to them through your DAW and not have configure anything in VE Pro because the works already done for you.

Regardless at some point you will need to have all those windows opened and then saved to each project to ensure you get those same instruments each time you open a project.  Obviously once the project is setup, i find myself able to switch back and forth without preserve function.  On a Windows XP64 machine slave.

Glad you brought this up as it was something I was wondering about.  I actually asked myself if this was always this way because I didn't do anything to make it happen differently.  Nope, it's definitely the new software because I went back and tested it on an old version of the interface.

I'll be darned! This totally works!!! (tried it in DP, no need to use the preserve feature as suggested above).

What is the preserve feature really for then?!

  • Here is a question: Say you're working on a film and want to use the same template for most of the score. So you create the template for cue 1 & save in your DAW, move on to cue 2, then start on cue 3, and call it a day.

When you come back tomorrow to continue your work on cue 3, will it open the cue 1 template you used?

  • The answer would be yes.

If you opened up project 1, loaded a a bunch of VE Pro sessions and then saved.  Then "preserved them" and connected to them with project 2, then saved.  They will now come up in both 1 and 2.  It would be the same for project 3, or 4 or 100.  Each time you switch projects the windows will disappear, and then reload though.  That is one of the features preserve does, it keeps it literally up and running without closing down and letting you pick the preserved instance, instead of the slave machines generic service (which will laugh a new window).
