  • MIR update question

    I was getting MIR at the end of August but did not install it yet.

    The main reason to get it now was- besides the introductory offer- that "in a couple of weeks" there will be Vst support included in an update. As my current computer ( Quadcore Q9559, 8 gig ram, windows x64, windows 7 will be installed in a few days) is a bit "underpowered"  for a complete orchestral setup plus MIR, I tried to find some solution :

    The obvious idea was to first finish my music, then do separate dry mixdowns of each instrument, load them into Kontakt and route them to MIR.

    Like this I would take off the heavy ram load from sample playback and most of the ram and cpu would be available for the MIR processing.

    Of course this all depends on Vst support.

    Is this possible, or did I just make some wrong assumptions?

    I dont have a problem to work in two passes: First finish the music then put it on the MIR soundstage.

    I guess I will not be the only one who would really know how long are those "couple of weeks" gonna take. I understand it is a difficult question. But maybe one of the VSL officials could give us a hint at what stage you are with  next MIR-update.

    it looks as you mixed up some things, sorry to say so.

    Right now, Vienna MIR will only host Vienna Instruments. This is due to the fact that MIR has to "know" a lot about an incoming signal to work properly. Especially the so-called Dirctivity Profiles we measured for most of the original instruments we recorded are on of the fundamental techniques MIR is founded upon. - You might want to read the chapter "Think MIR" in the manual for more details.

    Of course, we have no means to "know" that much about other instruments and signal sources (... the Profiles take into account the position of the microphone in regard to the original instrument, the instrument's size, its distance to the microphone, ist volume, and so on). Nonetheless, as we understood the needs of our custumers who want to host other VSTi's within MIR, we decided to add so-called "General Purpose"-Profiles for the use with those other sources. They offer just the basic tools to position a source on one of MIR's stages. - _This_ is what the coming update will include. You will still need "live" VIs or 3rd-party VSTis inside MIR, triggered by MIDI.

    With this added feature, MIR remains to be a standalone application, not a VST-plugin. It won't add support for audio inputs! These are options we have in mind for a enhanced version, internally called "MIR Pro" for now, but this version won't see the light of day during the next few months.

    I hope this makes things a bit clearer.

  • ahem, I stil think, I did not understand alltogether wrongly, or I am just stubborn.    [:)]

    Once you include the Vst capacity, I dont see there is necessity to do all these demanding tasks (MIR and sample playback) at the same time.

    Lets say I have violin1 from appassionata. With the live playback- triggered from the sequencer- I would load the corresponding profile in MIR and tweak until I get the desired results.

    When I mix instead my violin 1 down to audio, I would then get a identical sonic result.

    Wouldnt it be desirable to treat that file in exactly the same manner as the "live" playback? Or is there some reason to not implement it in such a way in the mentioned update?


  • It seems to me as you still mix up VSTi-support with MIR being a VST plugin (which it isn't).

    The example you give is right - in principle. But the answer is simple: Vienna MIR doesn't offer audio inputs. We plan to introduce this option with Mir Pro. The reason we didn't do this with MIR's first incarnation can be found in a couple of huge technical issues our developers will have to solve first.

  • Sorry to say that but it's not very clear for me either.

    MIR will support 3rd party VSTi, right ? Kontakt 4 is a VSTi, no ? I can load in Kontakt any kind of sample I want and why not -on C3 for instance- my voice singing "the Moritat of Mackie Messer". So each time I'll press C3 on my keyboard, Kontakt will play "the Moritat" as long as this C3 will last. So if I can place Kontakt on the MIR stage and play this C3, I should normally hear myself singing "the Moritat" on the MIR stage or am I missing something ?

    This should work, although i would have thought that having the audio file start at the beginning, no matter what the sequencer is playing, would be rather disconcerting.

    Ah! 8-) Ok - sorry for being slow-witted - yes, this would work, but I wouldn't use it for anything longer than a 30" TV-spot, for the reasons DG pointed out in his answer above.

  • I dont see any fundamental problem to have the sequencer trigger the starting point of the sample and thus avoid any timing issues.


  • Maybe no fundamental problem - but its just a question of practical usability when you want to apply changes to the ending of a 10-minute piece and have to wait 9.5 minutes for it to happen, each time you trigger the files .... [O][sn]

  • I can of course put each phrase of my lied on a different key in Kontakt. The Moritat as for instance 26 phrases, so with 26 keys I can do it ! Maybe a little tricky but my voice can like this be on the MIR stage among my VI  Orchestra... until of course MIR Pro is there to make things simpler (with audio input). As soon as the VSTi update is there, I'll try to make a demo so every one can hear the result. The voice is a very important part of a lot of classical pieces, isn't it ?
