A little help with Sibelius Soundsets greatly appreciated!

No doubt these questions have been asked but I've spent all day seeking and can't find the answers. The sibelius manual is not clear either.

Basically I'm having trouble working out how the whole Sound Set thing works and how the relationship between instrument definitions, staves and VE 3 is achieved. Coming from Finale this all seemed quite clear but here I'm totally lost.

1. If I want to have a stave for a Flautist such that the Flautist moves between Alto Flute, Flute and Piccolo how do I set this up? At present if I add the word alto or piccolo to the library and add the instruments in VE3 I can indeed get these to play back in their basic non vib articulation but as soon as I add staccato it reverts back to the normal flute.

2. Is there anywhere in which the rationale for the way in which VSL have set up their Sound ID/matrices is explained? For instance the Solo Violin definitions have numerous matrices which are 6 wide but many of these are duplicates on all levels.

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated as I've reached a point where I don't know where to turn.

In order to use our sound sets, you don't have to fully understand the technology behind it. Creating sound sets is a complex task, where many things have to be considered.

Here is how you can change istruments on one staff:
1) Reserve two (or more) channels for the instrument on the Sibelius Manual Sound Sets page, for example one for “Flute” and one for “Piccolo”.
2) In Vienna Ensemble, also add two instruments for this staff. Use the same channels you set up on the Manual Sound Sets page.
3) In one Vienna Instrument load the first instrument (in your case Flute), and in the other one the second instrument (in your case Piccolo Flute).
4) To switch between the instruments, use the Sibelius Instrument change command.

I'm not quite sure, what you mean with your second question. The Solo String matrices have seven (not six) cells H-Span and 2 cells V-Span. Some of the cells in the second row are duplicates of the first row. That's because generally the cells in the second row are variants of the first row, but not for every articulation, there are variants available.
