The only "sonic" benefit would be that you are able to actually _lower_ one channel of a stereo-signal in volume, either before or after the actual panning. This can be helpful, as well as the option to switch one channel's polarity independently from the other one.
Other than that, a Cubase/Nuendo-user just gets nicer graphics from the Vienna Suite's PowerPan, plus the option for saving his/her own settings. 😉
... in case of Logic, the need for PowerPan is evident, though.
