  • Altiverb Stage Positioning - Out of Phase?

    Hi,

have any Altiverb 5 users out there encountered phase / correlation issues with the Stage Positioning feature? I've just finished a load of stuff for broadcast, and am concerned about the readings I'm getting off the correlation meter on the software plug (Elemental Audio Inspector XL) that's strapped across the main mix buss.

I recognise that mono compatability isn't the absolute must that it used to be for TV and radio, but even so, I think it's a good benchmark to try and stay with as regards mixing. The stuff I've done is all soft instruments, each with an Altiverb 'stage position' on its insert, and then bussing an amount of each instrument to a main reverb (also Altiverb), as per the Audioease instruction video and manual. The main mix sounds great in stereo, but consistently dips into the 40-50% region of the correlation meter; 100% being super-safe-in-phase-mono'd-to-the-hilt and 1% being out-of-phase-LSD-aural-catastrophe. Disabling all the Altiverb inserts and bussing everything through a hardware reverb results in a much more reassuring meter reading of about 70%.

By way of comparison, listening to stereo classical or film music recordings, usually throws up a reading of 70-80%, occasionaly dipping down to 50%.

Can anyone provide some informed advice (I'll be the first to admit that my knowledge of this stuff is shaky at best) as to whether I should be worried, or tips and workarounds? For what it's worth, I've already posted on the Audioease site, but there's no-one at home there [8-)]

    Ta!

  • Okay-- more than three years later....

Interesting topic. I'd love to hear people's opinions about this.

  • [quote=reid]Hi,

    Hi Reid

Rooms and phase issues belongs together... also in the real acoustic world.

    How to solve the problem:

    1. Try to find your favorite position within Altiverb (I assume you are using the "speaker shifting" for that).

    2. Consult a correlation meter.

    3. Make now the fine adjustment with the speakers for good correlation values. Sometimes you only need some very small "speaker shiftings" for much better results.

    Good luck...
