  • Mixing basics: Vienna Suite, EQ before or after Multiband?

    Hiya...

Im no mix-master, but i'm tryin to get a decent mix down for some score pieces  to the director as demos before i send it to a professional to have it mastered. But i was wondering (and this may seem totally novice of me) as to any opinions on how to order EQ and multiband comp.

Right now im using Vienna Suite's  'Master Equalizer' and 'Multiband.' I usually put EQ before the multiband comp, but i started to wonder if the multband is kind of negating any of the EQ edits i have inserted. Would it make better sense to put the equalizer AFTER the multiband?

Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks!

  • There is no rule - it depends completely on the task at hand.

For example: It can make much sense to cut unnecessary low-frequency content from a signal before you run it through an compressor.

OTOH, you may get rid of some annyoing little resonances of a signal which became obvious only due to some compression you applied - in that case you will use the EQ after the dynamics processing.

There are just a few occasions which can be seen as "written in stone", like the brickwall-limiter in a mix-bus, used to avoid any overloads: This has to be the last instance of your signal-chain.

  • Mixing - EQ generally is the first thing you would do when mixing. On a track by track basis if they need it. Compression the same and after EQ dependent on how many other plugs you use - but not Multiband Comp I would suggest

Mastering - A Multiband Comp would be nearer to the last thing. The Master EQ first -  would be for just that - mastering the mixed down stereo track as with the Multiband Comp if required.

No hard and fast rules though.
