Dear VSL-community , Dear guys & gals from VSL ,
I'd like to know if there are any future plans to let Vienna Ensemble also host thirdparty VST's / AU's ?
Thanks in advance for any info on this !

welcome gerd,
herb already confirmed the next version update for Vienna Ensemble (presumably 2.1 and 3.1) will allow this.
to have that said beforehand: there is a bunch of third party VSTs / AUs and many versions are in use, so i'd assume not everything and all proprietary functions can be supported ... eg. interpreting various VST properties can be tricky ...

Hi Christian ,
thanks a lot for your quick reply and the info !
Sure , opening (a currently very stable) VE to 3rd party PlugIns is definitely quite a task ,
but I'm absolutely delighted that VSL plans to do this step .
I'm really looking forward to that !
May I ask if this feature is planned for 2009 , or later ?
Anyway , good luck to the developer team ...
Best wishes
Gerd
i can imagine our developers will now spend some time polishing MIR and Vienna Imperial, then do some mainenance to the Vienna Suite and after OS X 10.6 and Windows 7 is out put some work on VI & VE ...
i'm under the impression Apple and Microsoft are about starting a race who will be the first releasing a new OS version (summer 09?), so maybe for both it would be clever to wait for the first updates ;-)

I'm dying to get 3d party into VE, but even more important is the painfully long sample re-loading issue. Hopefully, you can address that issue sooner rather than later.

Have you tried my "dummy host" trick? It doesn't solve the problem, but it cuts my re-loading time down from 17 minutes to just under 4 minutes.

I would think that 3rd party VSTi's should be the #1 priority for VSL.
- It's probably relatively easy to accomplish - a smaller amount of man hours of programming to complete it than Mir.
- If it works even nearly as well as VE3 does it will be an instant market hit and a 'friend-maker' for many composers who currently have little or no VSL product.
- It would solve a huge problem for all of us who need to have more sample libraries at our finger tips.
- If they go for Kontakt as one of the first VSTi's they certify to work they will capture a huge new client base.
- If they go for Play as one of their first VST's they certify they will gain a giant advantage over their #1 competitor. Even Play's stated network solution doesn't yet mention their plans for MIDI implementation.
- with Mir they don't have a huge potential customer base as they would with this network solution. Mir will cost the customer quite a bit - but a relatively small portion of that expenditure will actually go to VSL - most of the money will go for purchasing of hardware to make it work. VSL is taking a lot of money out of the pockets of their customers but only returning a small amount to themselves.
- another competitor (Audio Impressions, the DVZ people) already have a working, shipping software that allows 32 channels of audio over ethernet back into a master computer from a slave. I've seen it & it works. They had a Mac running Logic hooked up to PC slave running Kontakt and Giga (in a wrapper). I played it. it worked with no latency problems. They still have to use MoLCP to get the MIDI to the slave. The software implementation is not nearly as slick as VE3. But it seeminly works well. Their next plan is to do some sort of MIDI to the slave implementation. VSL is aware of this software. Do they wish to miss this marketing opportunity to someone else?
- VE3 was The Software of the Year for 2008. There's no reason why VE3.1 can't be same for 2009.
- Waiting for Snow Leopard and System 7 to do this is not necessary. Most of us will be using OSX 10.5 and XP/Vista for some time to come because all the third party VSTi developers will not be able to deliver their product on Snow Leopard or System 7 for some time anyway. Besides, even if our Master DAW does become Snow Leopard or System 7 it doesn't necessarily follow that our slave computers will have to follow suit.
- Considering the long term success of VSL - think about Apple. They made wonderful, expensive computers for years and years. When they finally started to acheive a market breakthrough it was because of the iPod - an inexpensive product that tied everything together for a whole new set of consumers.
- This 3rd party VSTi solution would tie everything together - VSL's way.
Nice analysis Jack. Really spot on -- making something like Kontakt run on one of my VE3 16 gb PC farm machines. I too see this as a priority number 1 for all the reasons you state. No suprise, I have just about every VSL library out there but there are times where I need something ONLY found in Kontakt for one of my projects.

Oh yeah, there could be an internet link on the 3.1 GUI that goes directly to a VSL store that sells download instruments and software.
So now they would have all these new customers staring at the VSL logo every day for the rest of their lives who would be 'one-click' away from purchasing the latest downloads. The new customer would be working and suddenly realize that they don't have an oboe - voila, the French Oboe shows up magically on their slave machine. Another new friend satisfied. Gee, they might have heard good things about Vienna Suite - maybe they should buy that too.
Another link on the GUI could be for the help manual & FAQs to offload technical questions. Like Omnishpere, create a button with a link to a page with the latest updates.
On a couple other forums I visit many people are already considering (and hoping for) VE3.1. Some are even planning their next slave computer purchase to coincide with its arrival. It is the logical answer for so many of us. There is a groundswell of anticipation. VSL would do well to take advantage of the goodwill extended towards them.
I can't understand why you guys would keep bumping this.
Are you trying to intimate that an open VE3 is something you'd like to use?
Hey guys,
Im hoping that when the new vienna ensemble comes out it will be able to host my gigastudio 3 libraries and kontakt 64 bit. If this happens I will be able to use my i7 slave PC and iMac. Anyone know when VSL plans to release this?

The only people who know are those who work for VSL, and they're not saying ATM. However, as Gigastudio 3 is not a VSTi, and was never 64bit, so I doubt that can be hosted antyway. I'm not sure how you intend to solve that one, unless you port everything to Kontakt.
In any case is Kontakt 64bit? If not, then I guess your original question is still moot.
DG
well I was thinking of using the giga vst adaptor. Having my computer in dual boot. 32bit windows for gigastudio 3 and when Kontakt 64 bit is released I will use 64 bit windows ( windows 7 or vista ) to run kontakt.
Cavaett: I'm not a Giga guy at all.
But when I saw Audio Port Universal working at NAMM it had an instance of Giga working with a wrapper from a company I think was called FX Max.
So it may not be impossible with VE3.1. It might just have some limitations.
The issues that VSL might be having could be:
(1) to what extent would VSL be liable to make your [hybrid] system work?
(2) Herb has spent a ton of money over the past years on the development of Mir and would probably like to see the first nickel back. The VSL software development team is talented buy small [miniscule actually]. How these resources are allocated is probably carefully considered by Herb.
Still, with this in mind, there is great pent-up demand for what VE3.1 can offer the workflow of almost every digital composer out there. They are so very close to being able to deliver 3.1.
Personally, I think that VSL could benefit more greatly from an immediate release of VE3.1 than an immediate release of Mir - despite how much resources have been dedicated to Mir. Mir will certainly emerge. However Mir's greatest moment in the sun is probably not the version they plan to release this spring but the later version that accomodates other libraries.
Hmm....other libraries? Does that sound like the key to the greater future of VSL? Surprisingly, yes. Just like for all the reasons I earlier elaborated regarding the promise of VE3.1.
To quote myself:
- Considering the long term success of VSL - think about Apple. They made wonderful, expensive computers for years and years. When they finally started to acheive a market breakthrough it was because of the iPod - an inexpensive product that tied everything together for a whole new set of consumers.

VE3.1 & the open version of Mir would be the way for VSL to own a greater share of the sample library market.
