  • A simple question about Matrixes

I have the Vienna SE and have a quick question about the Matrix Assign page. The manula and the video tutorial explain how therea re 12 slots and that you can assign a matrix to each slot and then use keyswitching to jump between the matrixes. My question is thsi, is there any way to assign a differnet MIDI channel to a matrix slot. For instance could i load up a matrix of orchestral strings in slot 1 and then load up a matrix of french horns in slot two. If i could assign differnet MIDI channels to each slot I could have 12 differnet instruments inside of one instance of the VI player. I hope this makes sense. For simple sketches with limited articulations this seems to make sense to me. Sort of like how the Kontakt player can load up 8 differnet instruments in a single instance.

If this can't work, can it be considered fo an update? I worry that if I have to open up a new instance of the VI player for every instrument there will be too many open and my humble computer will not be able to handle it all.

I love my Se and am hoping to get the extended version soon! Keep up the great work VSL!

    All the very best,

    Darren

  • maybe i don't understand ... but the amount of loaded sample data would always be the same ... either if the articulations (patches) reside within one matrix or preset or not? are you using vienna ensemble or single vienna instruments instances?

and remember: only a CRAY can run an endless loop in just three seconds.
  • Hello Darren

I recommend to read the text behind the links. Maybe they help to understand the

    questions you have:

The Difference between VI & VE

Further this link. It shows how a simple melody can be produced

    http://www.beat-kaufmann.com/vitutorials/vimidi/index.php

    In short

The Vienna Instrument can load VSL samples - such as staccatos, sustains, legatos

The meaning is, that you only use samples from one instrument into one VI... (example: the violin)

If you need to have another instrument, a viola for example, You should open a new Vienna Instrument for the viola.

Attention the Vienna Instrument ignores all information about Midi CH.

A new VI don't use a lot of RAM and when you load the same Samples into a new VI you want need more RAM!

So even if you load a new VI for Violin 2 > no more RAM is used.

You also have to open new VIs for each new instrument because the legato-samples are only monophone playable.

The Vienna Ensemble can be the host for up to 16 Vienna Instruments.

You can assign a Midi CH for each place inside the VE.

So if you want to have a string quartett inside the VE load a VI with the samples

of the violin 1 into the VE on place 1 and assign this VI CH 1.

    Place 2 > MidiCH2 > VI with Violin 2

    Place 3 > MidiCH3 > VI with Viola

    Place 4 > MidiCH4 > VI with Cello

The advantage of VE is that you are able to save a whole orchestra this way ... with pannings, effects etc.

  • I am not using the Vienna Ensemble just individual players. Yes the data would be the same but wouldn't I be using up extra ram buy launching the player 10 times for 10 different instruments. I think I need to check out the Vienna Ensemble.

    thank you for the help.
