  • Using ensemble with sibelius 5.1

Ok. There's probably an obvious solution to this and I just can't come up with it...

I'm simply trying to get a string quartet, which requires 2 solo violins. It seems that I have to load the same instrument twice (solo violin) into channels 1 and 2. The problem is that when I indictate Pizzicato for the 1st violin it applies to the 2nd as well; same with all dynamics and articulations.

How do I seperate these instances of solo violin so I can treat them as two seperate instruments?

    Please be kind and help.

  • You are probably using the same MIDI channel for both instruments. Make sure to change that, so that the MIDI from channel 1 goes to Instrument 1 and from channel 2 to Instrument 2. Look at the top part of the VE GUI, where all this is set.

  • Also be aware, that you have to use "Solo Violin 2" for the second violin. You can set it up in your play back devices/Manual Sound Set.

    Best wishes,

Jeff Briggs replied the following (unfortunately to the administrative email of the community)

I have intermittently had the same problem with my string quartet. I have solved it several times by making sure the sibelius mixer settings are correct (that is match the settings in VE). Several time I've had to shut down and restart everything for the fixes to take effect.

Make sure the Vienna Ensemble Special Edition is the set in the manual sounds page...

Truth is I have no Idea what the real problem is, but I have been able to solve the issue when it arises. Good luck.

and remember: only a CRAY can run an endless loop in just three seconds.
  • again ;-)

I just encoutnterd the problem you describe again... The program seems to "forget" and important setting or somethong...

Here's what I did to fix it. I deleted the configuration from the Play device page, then recreated it from scratch. Make sure each instrument is assigned its own midi channel in the Ensemble window, and that that matches the manual set up you enter into Sibelius. Also make sure that the mixer in Sibelius matches these settings as well.

The connection between Sibelius and Ensemble is not bullet proof yet. I wish they'd fix it...

    Good luck

  • Be aware that what I've written in this older post is only for Sibelius 5.1. I recommend updating to Sibelius 5.2.5 to every Sibelius user. The Sibelius guys fixed some playback bugs in this latest version.

But even in Sibelius 5.1 it should never be necessary to delete the Playback Configuration and start from scratch every time. There must be some other mistake in the configuration of jlbmuse ...
