    Ok, I'm just about to do the final mixing of my first VSL project in Logic 8. I've been working now and then with this little piece for over 2 months...

    My original midi file was imported from Finale and I just discovered that every track has panning data. This makes it impossible for me to use the pan/balance control in Logic's mixer window.

    Is there a quick way of deleting the panning data for every track? I can't find anything in the manual about this.

    OK, I can't help you with Logic, but there are a few general things that could help:

    1. VE and VI don't react to MIDI panning, so the data that exists is probably irrelevant.
    2. The only way to pan (almost) properly in Logic is to use a Direction Mixer plug for every channel.
    3. Therefore you would probably be better off panning in VE and doing it properly, rather than messing around in Logic.

     Thanks DG for a quick reply.

    1. At least VI reacts to the MIDI panning information in my file. Your'e probably right about VE though. I found a way to delete the panning data, but I had to do this with every track. A bit tiresome, would be nice if somebody knew a better and quicker way?

    2. I'll check out the Direction Mixer plug. Thanks for the tip.

    3. I actually started out using VE but i had some initial problems with soloing and muting tracks in Logic. I'm not sure if the freeze function work either. It might be me not knowing enough about Logic, but I switched back to using VI instead.

    I'll try out the different ways of panning inside Logic (to start with). I need to spend more "educational time" with this application anyway...[;)]

    If I'm not satisfied with the result I'll give VE another go.

    Are you sure? This was one of the complaints from Sibelius users when VI was first introduced. There is no pan function in VI, so I'm not sure where you are looking.

    Well, I might have misunderstood what kind of panning you were refering to.

    There is no panning in VI as far as I know, but what I meant was that Logic was reacting on the panning data that was in my file. Logic was then applying this data, regardless of what I set the panning control to.

    There could be automation data. For starters you may need to enable automation data by pressing "a" while on a track. Then choose the enable all tracks at the prompt. So to delete the automation in Logic (if this is actually your problem) -- under the "options" scroll to "Track Automation." There will be several options. If you have not written in any automation and are not committed to your mix, simply select "delete all track automation of all tracks." If you need to only isolate just the panning, this will be tedious as you will have to select the panning to be visible on each track where it says volume in yellow, then choose the "delete currently visible automation data" option.     I think it shows up as a MIDI controller. So:

    - Click on the edit list in the top right (lists, edit)

    - Find a Controller #10 MIDI message

    - Use the menu to "select similar events"

    - Press delete

    (edit: You would probably need to do this for each track.)

    Yes, it does show up as a MIDI controller. (I don't think this could be automation data since I haven't recorded any such. The MIDI information is actually coming from Finale.)

    I did have to do this for every track. I also discovered that there were Volume data (CC#7) in all tracks that I have to erase.

    You might be able to select all then look at the event list. However, I'm not sure that "select similar events" would catch pan messages on other MIDI channels than the one you selected. There's probably a slick way to do this but it might take some more research.

    this should work in logic of course you can also always use transformers (in environment or from window-tranform window/dialog/whatever) hope that helps

    Pan as MIDI controller 10: Hypereditor > select the pan channel > push Ctrl+A > hit Delete

    Pan as Automation Data: Option > Track Automation > Delete currently visible Automation Data of Current Track
