TODD AO Template for Logic 8 and Altiverb
Hi everyone. Well I finally got this template somewhere what I considered serviceable and so I've uploaded it to my site .. and also a new site :P Figured it was time to do some spring cleaning. So I thought I'd share some of my results. This template .. for Logic 8 .. consisted of 5 instances of Altiverb 6 .. I love the sound of TODD AO and I've really tried hard to get this sound right. I used send / return to apply relative depth in the instances of AV. . You can download the template here: . http://www.elvenmusic.com/tech/mix/mix.html . Although I can't swear that I have it, what I do have .. at least for me .. sounds quite realistic and is a good sound. Others may say there's too much reverb (Which is kinda silly since I'm working on a room simulation and not a reverb per se), and I'm sure this won't satisfy all concerned .. but I wanted to hear what your opinions on this mix. I'm going to be publishing the template .. with all the AV presets so anyone can try this .. in logic 8 at least. (I have also included pics of the AV instances so those with other sequencers and computers can also try it.) . Sounds wonderful Heto - I am with you this IR is nothing short of stunning.
One quick question for you. The 'misc' IR shows - 18m - st to st 'wide' mics. What is the reason there is that for your percussion?

Hey there, First of all thanks Jay ... coming from a composer like yourself I take it as a real compliment that you liked both the song and the sound. Second, there reason for choosing 18m wide st for the percussion was that it just gave the right amount of resonance in the background. Things like the snare, and the Marimba tend to need that added depth to give them the weight they need. It's been a fair old balancing act to get all the instruments working quite as I want them but the IR's were chosen because they gave the best sense of reality to this piece. . Of course .. and as I've said .. these are intended only as guides .. if you want to use a closer IR you can .. you may even prefer to use a closer IR in order to give a tiny bit more clarity to the instruments. I'm also using the fader controllers to set relative depth and I went through many different IR's on all groups to find the one that I thought sounded the most realistic for this room. And sometimes you find that the ones the work best are not what you would visually have intended to use. But it is all personal choice as to how one mixes within a room. . So that is the reason, simply that it sounded best and most real to me. To import presets to AV I would put them into your user/library/audio/presets/audio ease/altiverb 6 folder. Then they are in the main portion of the preset menu .. probably listed under "user" presets.

Just a quick question. Is there a reason why the instrument channels volume are down very low? I was playing the Violins 1 but they are quite quiet and when I turn the fader up then they become overly dry. Would it not be possible to increase the instrument channels faders and then up the altiverb reverb levels?

Yes .. the faders are not used for volume. They are used for controlling wet and dry signal .. or relative depth. If you want to increase the volume of the instrument then you should use the velocity and expression controllers. ... to your next question .. no .. cos this whole setup depends on using the instrument channels to set the depth. You can't get as a fine a definition on the depth if you're only using the AV instances for depth control.

first off i want to thank you for the excellent templates. They are so helpful when like me I am just starting with VSL, and on top of that learning Logic after years of Cubase. To be able to learn how to use the instruments realistically without having to worry about crafting a set-up that will produce a realistic sound is a great help and a massive time-saver.
Of course now i'm picking through your set-up and getting consumed at ways to tweak it for my use, but it's nice to see how other people work.
I have a question regarding the routing for your Logic 8 Space designer template (HetoreynVI Temp 4)> before routing the tracks to the Aux tracks with the send/return reverbs, you bus each VI track to a new bus with Direction Mixer etc. With the exception of a few VI tracks most get there own bus. Why not just add the pan settings and Direction mixer onto the VI objects that don't need to be grouped to help with the mixer clutter? (not that your mixer is cluttered, just i'm working on a macbook pro)
Also with the Aux sends being post does the fader control the reverb tail/amount?
And more question i notice with logic if i delete a track in the arrange window, with say VI on it, this object is still in the environment. Whats the best way to delete something, unload the pluggin and delete the track or go into the enviroment and delete the object there?

Very interesting about the volume faders, I've never really used them in that manner. It is a very nice template, I have been playing around with it and it sounds great! I tried using the Todd AO impulses myself, but at the time preferred the Toldex but you might have changed my mind!@hetoreyn said:

Well the Fader method is really an adaption of that used by Christian Kardeis. Although his method is used for CPU saving .. cos all channels are tied to one reverb instance .. whereas my method still uses the four main reverb instances and an extra for an 'Overhead' sound. The big problem with trying to get a very realistic mix is that you need a greater degree of depth control within the instrument groups than just four instances usually allow. So in the way this template does it you kind of get that. . I'm also a fan of the Teldex IR's but I have a fondness of the TODD AO stage and .. power hungry though it may be .. I'm very happy with the sound of the new template. But certainly there's nothing wrong with applying different IR's to the template so simulate a different room. If you pick IR's which are similar, in distance and recorded width to the TODD AO one's used then it should hopefully all work. Thanks for the thanks :D . Hi, I took a look at your template and noticed that even with direction mixer plugs on the channels, you still didi some panning on the channel strip "balance" control. Can you explain your approach?
