  • Pavane by Gabriel Faure double instruments?

I really enjoy the sound sample of Faure's "Pavane" done by Jay Bacal with Special Edition (Standard). It sounds really transparent, not too much reverb, just very natural. Good job!

I have one question concerning the instruments:

It's written that this piece has been done with the standard library of SE.

Below is written 2 Flutes, 2 Oboes, etc... but the standard library comes only with 1 flute, 1 oboe, etc. does that mean that the same sample (for example "Flute 1") is used twice? Doesn't it make any phase issues? Well, as long as both instruments are not playing in unisono.

Just like to hear your opinions and experiences with that situation.

    Best wishes!

    Andie

  • If I remember correctly, I randomized the start times of the second instrument (flute 2 for example), transposed the midi up a whole step then pitch shifted the part back down a whole step.  This should avoid any phasing issues.

    Best,

  • Thanks Jay for your reply!

So you have simply pitch shifted the sample and then put it back by MIDI transposition to it's correct pitch? Doesn't it actually loose a bit of it's quality?

You did a great job on Faure's Pavane! Also the other "Special Edition" sound samples are really nice and I think.

Did you use exclusively sounds from the standard edition for the Pavane?

Another question about "Special Edition Parade": There's between the guitar introduction and the solo violin an "expressivo" part with string orchestra (with portamentos) are these the Appassionata Strings or the normal orchestra strings of the standard library?

    Best regards!

    Thanks!

  • Andie -- I don't find that pitch shifting the samples DOWN by a whole step negatively affects the quality-- especially since I only do it when layering parts in unison.

I think I used some chamber and appassionata strings which I believe are from the extended edition.

Guy Bacos did the Special Edition Parade so I will have to let him answer that question.
