  • Non-vibrato?

     Hi all!

This is my first post here- just bought and installed Vienna SE standard the other day. So far I'm very impressed with the sounds, except that I can't find a way to play without vibrato in the legato and sustain articulations (solo strings). I was hoping there would be a way to fade vibrato in and out with, for example, aftertouch. This would add greatly to the expressive possibilities.

I notice that there are no dedicated 'non-vibrato' patches included in my library, does this mean I need to upgrade to 'strings plus' or even the full 'solo strings' to get this articulation/feature (something I just assumed would naturally be possible)?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

    Cheers, Paul.

  • The only non-vibrato patches are, er, the non-vibrato patches. The only way to fade them in is with a patch that is recorded this way, or by using a cell xFade. The second option really won't work with a solo instrument due to phasing issues, so your only option is to see which package has the patches that you need, and then purchase it.

  • That's funny ...

You are missing the non-vibrato-samples for the Solo Strings ... I am missing the vibrato-samples for the ensemble strings.

From reading the content-info of the Strings PLUS packet it seems, that those things are sadly still not included.

The Special Edition doesn't contain any non-vibrato strings samples, for those you need to buy the complete Vienna Instrument libraries such as Solo Strings or Orchestral Strings. However, the string ensemble sustains in SE are played with vibrato.

Yes, it would be great to add REAL vibrato with the mod wheel. It's very difficult to achieve technically with a solo instrument, and I would imagine impossible with an ensemble since all the players' vibrato is different.

  •  Thanks for the replies folks... I guess the only way to do what I'm talking about would be to add fake pitch modulation vibrato to a non-vibrato sound.

Unfortunately vibrato, especially on a string instrument, is much more complicated than that and would sound pretty awful. Maybe in the future, in some galaxy far, far away, this will become possible, but I don't think it will happen until we use 100% physically modelled instruments, rather than samples.

Yes, I think it's really hard to generate a realistic sounding vibrato with pitch-modulation on non-vibrato-samples (even on solo ones). Plus it would probably eat decent amounts of CPU power.

    Oh, that's right ... a very little bit ...

I guess I was more thinking of really strong (aka lyrical) vibrato, when I said "I'm missing vibrato".
