  • VE 2.0.2869 will not load in Logic 8.0.1 or Pro Tools HD 7.4 on Mac OS X (10.4.11)

Hi all, I don't seem to be able to get VE to run either in Pro Tools HD or in Logic 8 on my Mac. The plugin will load the VE service window and then sit thinking for ages about matters. After about five minutes it comes back and tells me that the VE service could not be started. Looking in activity monitor while this is happening shows that the vsldaemon service starts but then just sits with its status on not responding. I had the same trouble with the 2.0.1 release and was kinda hoping the new version would actually work! I've tried all the usual stuff like unistalling/reinstalling and repairing permissions etc, nothing makes any difference. Strangely the standalone version works fine. Any ideas on how I might resolve this problem? Many Thanks, Ian Wood http://www.ianalexanderwood.com

  •  Hi,

did you go through "AU validation" which is explained on page 5 in our VE manual?

Please try to start <Vienna Ensemble Service> "manually" from .../applications/Vienna Ensemble when VE doesn´t load properly in PT. Click on <reconnect> in PT/VE plug-in after Vienna Ensemble Service has started.

    I hope that helps.

VSLDaemon is a UNIX service which appears as "not responding" when being inactive and this is exactly how it is supposed to behave, so please don´t worry about it.

    Best,

  • Hello. Yes I went through AU validation in Logic and the plugin shows up as validated in the Audio Unit Manager. I have tried what you suggested in Pro Tools and it makes no difference whatsoever. You see the problem does not appear to be the service starting, rather it has trouble connecting to the server after it has started. It just doesn't see it. It's my understanding that Ensemble is a separate process to PT/Logic which is essentially why I want to use it, (I have 7.5 GB RAM) this also seems to be what is causing the problem as every other plugin I have on the system (Including Vienna Instruments AU & RTAS) behaves as expected. How do the 2 programs communicate? Are there network ports that need to be open, could my firewall be causing this issue? I know that usually firewalls and whatnot are for incoming/outgoing traffic, but I thought maybe you might have used a networking protocol to ferry information to and from the vienna ensemble engine and the host sequencer? Just a shot in the dark. I think it's pretty unlikely that this problem is anything to do with the installation/validation of the software, I've followed all the steps necessary and as I mentioned previously VE loads as standalone with the Pro Tools HD coreaudio driver (Or the standard internal one) I look forward to hearing what you guys think might be the problem. • ian, there is soem communication running over the local port 6179 TCP but only the OS X built in firewall is blocking such local calls iff set to stealth mode resp. some norton firewalls .... however if the VI opens this seems to be not the reason.

have you also tried to repair permissions on your system volume (using the disk utility)?

please remember to reboot your machine before (permission repair, upgrades, installs) to make sure no involved processes are running or loaded in memory.

and remember: only a CRAY can run an endless loop in just three seconds.
  • Yes I've repaired all the permissions and rebooted several times, it makes no difference. I am only using the standard OS X firewall and it is not in "stealth" mode.

  • Hi Guys. Any more suggestions as to how I fix this problem? It's quite frustrating! Thanks Ian
