    Hi guys,

    I am totally new to VSL and all of its library's.  I haven't even purchased anything yet. I'm thinking off getting the Special Edition II but I'm really not sure how any of these instrumnets work.  

    I use logic 8 and I hear alot of folks complaining about the "performance tool" in Logic 8.....what does that mean. is the VSL not a plug in for Logic in the AU format?  Or do you need a seperate performace tool?  I don't really get that.

    I watched some of the videos on the site, and from what I can gather, there is a plug in on each track but it is called the VSL server application, what is that?  

    So, anyway I have a dual 2Ghz G5 with 2GB Ram, I'm not sure where to start, this product is very confusing to me, but it sounds great, I'm especially interested in the ability to change articulations on the same midi channel, current I use Motu symphonic instrument, and what VSL sounds came with Kontakt 3

    So If someone can please help me figure out this product line, It would be much appreciated.

    Hi Herbert. The VSL (= Vienna Symphonic Library) Performance Tool was an application which worked in conjunction with VSL's old sound libraries (Pro Edition, Horizon series, etc.) Now that VSL have their own Vienna Instrument the Performance Tool (which used to control legato intervals and repetitions) is no longer necessary, and since Special Edition runs on the Vienna Instrument you needn't worry about it. It was indeed a bit of a pain to set up.

    The Vienna Instrument works standalone and as a plug-in in Logic (and other sequencers) and you don't need any extra software. (I believe the 'VSL Server Application' is something that automatically launches when you use Vienna Ensemble, a free (to registered VSL users) program which lets you to group together multiple instances of the Vienna Instrument, set instrument ranges, control volume and panning, etc.)

    By the way, I don't think there is a collection called 'Special Edition II', but there are downloadable versions of SE which differ from the DVD version! To get more familiar with what's in the collections it's advisable to check the contents of every title carefully in the 'PRODUCTS' section of this web site.

     Actually, they don't. The PLUS part is different though. But the SE STANDARD download is the very same. (more expensive if you're planning on buying the whole thing.) If yo're gonna buy the whole thing, just buy the DVDs, it's cheaper in the long run.

    ... and can't be spread over several computers, especially important when buying PLUS too

    Oh yeah, forgot about that.

    Yeah, that's true it can't be spread over lots of computers. So if you need that, then by all means, go for the download.

    In my case though, I don't have multiple computers to spread it over. I only have one. So I'd be putting Standard and PLUS on one computer. I hope that woris.

    Thanks for all the replies,  

    Still a bit confused, I hear of people spreading their samples out among multiple machines, particularly when using gigastudio, I did look into this as a solution, but I just ordered a new mac 8 core with 6gb ram. I'm hoping that I can get the full orchestration out of this machine and the VSL special edition without having to set up a sample farm of PC's to host all the samples,  but I might have to,

    Will the special Edition get me going?  can I add librarys later on if I need?  

    Do you think with  the new machine I will run out of power hosting say 24-32 VSL plugins?

    Hey Herbert,

    You will be just fine on a Mac Pro 8 Core with VI Special Edition.  You might at some point need more RAM if you start buying the "deeper" libraries (where each instrument has a much larger selection of articulations than the Special Edition instruments), but it depends on how you work with VI.  VI comes with a brilliant RAM optimizing feature which allows a guy like me on Macbook Pro Core Duo 2.16Ghz with 2GB RAM to run 18 instances of VI and still be all good.  Granted that's just about the limit of my system, but it still works.  If I can make it work, your power house Mac Pro 8 Core should be easy sailing and yes you will have room to grow.
