  • What are good recordings to use as comparisons for mixing orchestral music?

    Hi all,

    I know this is subjective and also depends on what sort of music is being mixed but what recordings do you guys/gals use to A/B your mixes against? Do you use any at all?

    Whats better, if there is such a thing, to compare againts soundtracks or concert music?

    I'm mainly working on multimedia/film projects requiring orchestral music.

    If anyone has a favorite recording that you feel is the perfect mix please let us know.

  • If you do have some hints or guidelines/temps from the director, A/B against that, most probably he liked something about it... if you're thinking of a certain style, you have already some examples of that in mind, so A/B against those... if you are just going for fun, you intent to sound like somethin. So no, don't A/B a soundtrackish score against a Beethoven real space recording, it won't be of any use for you. Common sense I thought. :)

    Since I've been dishing out advice (in other threads) about the importance of using good recordings to help refine templates and technique, I suppose its only fair that I hang my neck out and speak about the recordings I've been using with my own advice recently.

    For Orchestral Soundtracks:

       

        The 3 most recent Star Wars Movies by the London Symphony (for brass punch and rhythmic strings)

    For Orchestral Classical:

        Stravinsky Petrushka with Kent Nagano and the London Symphony Orchestra (P) 1998 (for solo woodwinds)

        Mahler Symphony No. 5 & No. 6 with Leonard Bernstein and the Wiener Philharmoniker (P) 1988/1989 (for getting a rich string sound and brass solos)

  • It can be a humbling reality check to put up Johnny Williams & the LSO against your sampled piece, but the effort can force you to redouble your efforts. It's something I need to work up the guts to do more often.


  • Yeah, I understand that but, there is no point in using lesser recordings for reference. Might as well aim high.
