  • clicks with VI in Cubase

     Hi,

I work in Cubase. And when I load any patch in VI VST I get clicks every time I hit the new sample within that patch. Once all the samples of the patch are played at least once clicks desapear. It sounds like the samples are being read from HD and loaded into buffer ram as I play them.

When I open the same patch in Ensemble it doesn't happen and all the samples play smoothly right away.

Does anybody know what could be the reason? It didn't happen before I installed Ensemble, even though it may not be related to that.

Appreciate your time and any advise.

    Thank you,

    sasha

  • I assume that you're using a Mac? I've never heard of this problem on Windows, but there have been threads about it previously on OSX. Please confirm which OS you use, before you get a load of information that is not appropriate to your system.

  •  Thanks for your reply DG.

I am on PC, using Vista 32 bit. Is there any way in VI to adjust the buffer size?

OK, so therefore the clicks are probably caused by setting the latency too low in the soundcard buffer. You can either alter this by going to the GUI for your soundcard, or do it from within Cubase via the Device menu. One more thing; check which driver you are using for the soundcard. It should be the ASIO one for the make of soundcard that you have. Also check that you are using the latest driver for your OS.

There will always be a trade off between low latency (for ease in playing stuff in) and computer performance. What are the specs for your PC?

  • for VISTA a computer should have at least 2 GB RAM and you should check the virtual memory settings (for the pagefile) - my recommendation for a sampling computer (if other applications allow) would be *don't use* or a fixed value as low as possible (eg. min = max = 512 MB)

i'm not yet quite sure if/how the prefetch technology has influence on preload buffer to be kept in physical memory

and remember: only a CRAY can run an endless loop in just three seconds.
  •  Thanks, DG and Christian.

unfortunately the issue is not the drivers or the latency. I do have 2gb ram with max and min set to the same value.

It sounds like the samples do not get preloaded ito buffer ram until you hit that sample. There is a drum library called "Drums from hell" which uses similar technology, where it'll load the particular ample within a kit only if you hit it. It makes a clicking noise but after that it plays fine as it's in a buffer ram.

Like I said if I use VI within VE with the same patch, from the same HD) it doesn't happen.

    Should I reinstall VI?

Do you think it has anything to do with VE being installed as it never happened before I installed and started using VE?

Sorry to bug you with my problems.

    Thank you,

    sasha

  • VI uses the memory within Cubase and VE uses memory outside. It could have something to do with this, but other than that I can't be any more help, I'm afraid.

  •  Hm.. that's interesting. I think it might have something to do with that.

Thanks for your help DG, you Are helpful.
