    I am considering buying the Vienna Special Edition for playback of my scores from Finale2008.

    1. Is it possible to load the Vienna SE sounds into full Kontakt2? (I haven't heard of anyone doing this so I suspect it's not)

    2. I can send midi from Finale via IAC-buses to Kontakt as a stand-alone app. Can I do this if I use the Vienna Ensemble app as a stand-alone? And can I load one instrument in each midi-channel in this app? Can I send, lets say 25-30 midi channels from Finale to Vienna Enemble to playback a full orchestra directly from Finale?

    3. A VSL forum member (Stephen Siegel) has described how he sends midi from Finale via IAC to Logic where he uses the VSL and VI sounds as plugins (if I have understood him correctly). Is this the only method if you want to use Finale and Vienna SE? (for me this means I have to buy both Vienna SE and Logic. I already own ProTools but PT doesn't support IAC.)

    PS. I know I can save midi data from Finale and then import this to ProTools, Logic or any other DAW. But what I am interested in is if I can use Vienna Special Edition in a way similar to how people could use OPUS 1&2, ie import the samples into Kontakt (or something similar) and get instant playback while I'm working and composing in Finale.

    1. Vienna Instruments sounds cannot be loaded into Kontakt, they have their own, very sophisticated sample player.

    2. You can easily send MIDI from Finale to a Vienna Ensemble Standalone using the IAC busses, if you have the RAM and the processing power, you can also run more than one VE Standalone. With the Vienna Instrument software you can create matrices having up to 144 matrix cells each containing a different articulation and you can have 12 matrices per MIDI channel giving you (theoretically) a possible 1728 different articulations per MIDI channel. (To learn how to do this look at the Vienna Instrument tutorial videos available online.) Finale simply looks at VE as if it were an External MIDI device and plays it. So you can play as you compose.

    3. Finale's Human Playback feature is programmed for the GPO and some other Garritan instruments. Thus its parameters might need to be edited  for use with VE.  Alternatively, you could construct Instrument matrices that have the same structure as the GPO keyswitch instruments and use the same keyswitches employed by the GPO instruments.

    4. While you can playback the instruments instantiated in a VE standalone, you will not be bounce to an aiff file directly as you can when using NI plugins instantiated as plugins directly in Finale. You could make a MIDI file and transport it to your DAW and instantiate VE as a plugin within the DAW to playback and record the file. Or, using Finale as the MIDI source you could route the audio from VE into your DAW - - to do this you would need to loop the signal back from VE into the DAW. Some audio interfaces such as those made by RME allow you to do this in software. MOTU interfaces such as the 2408 have mutiple ADAT inputs and outputs. On the 2408, you can, for example, run a short ADAT cable from the output  of Bank C to the input of Bank B. Then assign the output of VE to the first two channels of Bank C. In your DAW you would create an AUX channel whose inputs were the first two Channels of Bank B and whose outputs were Channels 1 & 2. However this setup is necessary only for recording - - you don't need it for playback.

    thanks for the thread, that added more information that I most likely will need. I actually bought Vienna SE (standard and ext. lib) today so tomorrow I will start installing everything! :-)

    thanks again for your help. Your previous accounts regarding Finale/IAC/Logic in the MakeMusic forum was what finally gave me the courage to take the plunge and buy Vienna SE. I will start with Finale and Vienna Ensemble and try to get this working first. Although I already own ProTools I have decided to keep this app for audio editing but soon invest in Logic and use this one for midi only. I have a feeling that Logic is more user friendly when it comes to midi?

     Hey Albert,

    Hats off to you using Finale to compose on. Having used Logic for a few years now I recently tried Finale as a composer tool and found it incredibly awkward.
