    Hi evereybody,

    I have a problem with note repetition in the strings. For example with the orchestral double basses patch (35S DB-6 legato): if I hit, for example, E2 (Middle-C = C4), let it sound for half a second or longer, and then - without a break - hit the same key again and let it sound, this second note is always a lot louder at its beginning (like sforzato) than the first note (in order to be sure that it's not me who always hits the second note with more velocity, I activated the Velocity x-fade  button on the Perform Control page and set the fader to "31").

    The same problem appears with the orchestral cellos (patch: 25S VC-8 legato; for example: E2), though not as strong as with the double basses.

    The violins (05S VI-14 legato; for example: E5) have the same problem, too; though less evident. However, here this first problem is combined with even another one: after about half a second the repeated note suddenly dies away and immediately grows louder again (as if the note was "stumbling" and then starting again).

    With the orchestral violas (15S VA-10 legato; for example: E4) this second problem is the same as with the violins, whereas the "sforzato"-problem does not appear.

    Not all notes are equally affected, some work just fine.

    Does someone have any idea of what's going on here?

    Hi Dirko. I hear the same thing you're hearing - I believe the initial note triggers a different sample from the subsequent notes, maybe someone else can confirm that and explain the thinking behind it? The legato intervals were designed to create smooth note transitions in unbroken melody lines, so for repeated notes it's probably advisable to use a non-legato patch.

    Hi,

    when you trigger a note again, you hear a repetition sample - which is designed to overlap with the previously played note. It´s best to use a sustain pedal to connect to 2 MIDI events - or make sure that the repeated note is connected directly to the previously played note.

    A real Performance Repetition note (like the Performance Legatos) has the release sound of the previously played note at the beginning - to make it easier to overlap.

     What is this "Performance Legato"? Is it something only the "big" Libraries have and the SE doesn't? And would it enable me to repeat a note without those mentioned artefacts?

    in my understanding:

    every note which does not overlap with a preceeding note is a single note -> has a certain attack, a certain *body* and a certain release.

    every note which depends on the preceeding note (pervormance element) needs to overlap, otherwise the sampler would not *know* it has to be handled different from a single note.

    in principle this applys also to a following note (now affecting the relase instead of the attack)

     

    an overlap can be represented by the note itself (piano roll), by a release sample (sounding after the note off command has been triggered) or by adjusting the threshold (the time indicating to the sampler two notes are overlapping even if the piano roll shows it other)

     

    basically there are 2 types of performance elements: legato (start note -> destination note) and repetition (same note)

    Actually, I replied to this already on Sunday, but somehow my reply has not shown up in this thread (without me noticing it so far). Well, I guess I will have to write it again ...    :-)

    Unfortunately, I still don't know what to do about those artefacts in the repeated notes. What I basically would like to know is:

    If I want to play the same note again, like the second note in a slowly played "God Save The Queen" (just as an example), what would I have to do to make this repeated note sound okay (that is: without the "sforzato" and the "stumbling" I described above)?

    And before I forget, let me ask again: What is this "Performance Legato"? Is it something only the "big" Libraries have and the SE doesn't?

    The legato patches in SE are performance legatos (monophonic legato patches based on real performed interval samples).

    to get on the ground of your problem we would at least need a midi file and the preset/patch/matrix info to understand your issue (write to support@vsl.co.at and attach a midi file, logic song, whatever you use and shows this behaviour) - sounds ok or not ok is sometimes hard to describe in words.

    the term *performance legato* might be a little bit outdated and no longer commonly in use (for us clearly a legato is a performance element) but the SE patch matrix preset manual eg. page 5 should help you as well as the legato paragraph for the respective instrument in the patches chapter of the manual
