  • Sarraca, Of course the VSL Konzerthaus Organ is very nice but! If you are looking for organ only did you ever think about Hauptwerk software? This is a real Organ software. It is managable like A Real Organ... and you have the possibility to use many different Pipe organ from around the world.     well, the 2 x 2 GHz is not a bad machine at all and 3.5 GB should be sufficient enough for loading a lot of instances.

    not having a seperate harddrive will of course affect disk streaming (and finally the number of voices) and with altiverb it depends ... hard to say how much CPU will be left in your setup ... the VI itself doesn't need much CPU

    please understand the VSL system requirements as meant for the specific library only - additional tasks on the same machine will clearly sum up.

    assuming you ar streaming from and possibly also recording to the single disk in your computer can be a significant bottleneck ...

    Migot, what makes you think the Vienna Konzerthaus Organ is _not_ manageable like a real organ? We sampled each and every of the 8000 flutes individually, so you can combine stops according to your own taste, like in Real Life. The only thing we added on the top of it are complete combinations, for the sake of saving voices within the Vienna Instrument Sample Player.

    BTW - the more "exotic" stops of the Konzerthaus Organ which are still unreleased are already in the pipeline (pssssst - don't tell anybody 😉 ...)

  • The Konzerthaus Organ is the only instrument in the wonderful VSL family which would have his own interface, his own Organ Console interface! Dietz, What's let you think that I'm not organist? Respect Alain LeBlond Composer born in 1957

  • Alain, I was not meaning to say that you're no organ player! :-) ... I understand now that you would like to see a quasi-photo-realistic interface, and I can follow your demands. I was just wondering what you miss from the actual _instrument_ (apart from Tremulants and fancy graphics).

  • Hello all, thanks for your answers and Merry Christmas. I looked at Hauptwerk organs, really not bad. But I think I fall in love with VSL's one :) cm, you wrote 3.5 GB of RAM in your post but I said my setup is 2.5 GB. Is it a mistake or an advice ? Well, I think I'm going to buy a new hard drive, it's the weak part of my setup. Do you really think it'll be ok with this ? And what about that Audio Device purpose ? Could you (everyone) tell me what type of Audio(midi) device you use ? That's an "intimate" part of digital music rarely discussed in topics I read... In which way performances are affected by this ?

  • you'r right ... the 3.5 was a misread ... with the VI player each sample needs a preload buffer of 64 KB, so you could load all patches for the organ into about 870 GB RAM (allow 1 GB for the system you still have some memory left).

     

    indeed the audio device is an intimate part of a system .... on a mac i would prefer apogee (has the lowest latency available) but there are a lot of other fine products - just consider that having a harddisk (or other device) and a soundcard simultaneously connected via firewire probably will trouble you in most cases.

    So, I looked at hard drives... and the question is : what really is a streaming drive ? You talked about firewire (what's this firewire trouble stuff ?) but I think SATA drives are faster, aren't they ? Is acces time more important than rough reading speed for samples ? And I read big sectors size may be better for RAID : http://community.vsl.co.at/forums/p/6862/50481.aspx ; what about individual drive ?

    haha - of course you're right ... MB not GB

     

    most firewire audio devices grab all the bandwidth available (resp. block the bus) so leaving not enough throughput for a harddisk to stream samples from it then.

     

    sATA is always the first choice (besides SCSI of course, but almost no machine has that anymore ourdays ...) - but clearly an sATA disk has to be connected direcly using sATA then and not via firewire or USB (external enclosure)

     

    access time is important, reading speed is important big sector size is good, but less important (the default on OS X is 4096, that's the same i'm recommending for windows/NTFS where you need to select it) - every common 7.200 rpm drive is fairly ok. if the question arises: cache size does have no influence on streaming, NCQ (or TCQ) has ... this means sATA II is better than sATA I

     

    assuming you are rather referring to block size (related to RAID) the default would be 64KB which is ok and works best in almost all cases

     

    basically i do not see any need for a raid with a single library on an sATA drive (and macs do only software raid unless you have a real pricey controller) - even with more libraries you better spread them across multiple drives in a clever way or keep an additional drive for recording ...
