• Moving to Cubase (good move or not?)

Sonar vs Cubase.  Now, I know that this is an age old debate, so let me start with saying that I'm not trying to compare the two as far as personal preference, but I'm more concerned with hacking through the likes and dislikes and getting to the meat of the subject as far as features are concered.

I would like to move into using Cubase as from what I've read it's what most people at the "top" use with sample libraries and Vienna Instruments.  My logic, however flawed, would tell me that's because it's actually more powerful. Now that Sonar 7 has been released with added MIDI functions, I'd be tempted to assume that it's actually more powerful than Cubase.  However, I don't have very much experiance with Cubase, so I'm wondering if anybody here as had experiance with both and can help lay out the specific advantages and/or disadvantages of each over the other.

There seems to be this idea that Sonar is "semi-pro" and that other sequencers... such as Pro Tools... are "pro," but as I've compared the two, in my opinion Sonar stomps on Pro Tools.  My theory is that its just because PT came first.  I wonder if the same it true for Cubase, or if Cubase is actually more powerful. I don't mean to open a can or worms, so hopefully that's not what happens, but does anybody have experiance with both when related to VSL who could offer some insight? [:D]

Really it doesn't matter what you use, as long as it suits you. There are features in Cubase that Sonar doesn't have. I couldn't do without them, as I've used them for 8 or 9 years, but I guess what you've never had, you don't miss. P/T is a very good audio app. As a sequencer it just doesn't cut it IMO. However, there are people here who would disagree. Then again they probably don't need the features that I do. In terms of MIDI, Cubase is probably the most advanced and features rich sequencer for any platform, but if you don't need those features it doesn't really matter what you use.

Hey DG, thanks for your response.

See, but it's a little more than that, cause there may be certain work flow issue or MIDI editing features that I don't even know I'm missing out on.

What kind of specific work do you do DG? (Just curoius, looking for insights into the business...)

  • There are too many features to go through, but for me the most important features missing are Tempo Process and Warp. If you want to know a little more about the latter, I think that there is a video of it in action here.

Other features to investigate are in the Logical Editor.
