    Hi folks

    I would want to try win xp 64 in the purpose of breaking the memory limit barrier and I am wondering which soundcard is compatable and has win xp 64 drivers.

    But do the soundcard needs to have them to work and make sounds?

    I guess some of you has an answer for this.

    You do need 64-bit drivers for your audio card. I've used an RME HDSP9652, and it worked perfectly under XP X64. As far as I know, all of their current cards have 64-bit drivers, but double-check whatever model interests you on their website (rme-audio.com). You can't go wrong with RME - top-notch hardware, and excellent drivers, too!

    Yes, most RME cards have 64bit drivers, but some don't so check carefully.

    Thanks both for your answers.

    The hardware part is settled

    I would like to run Logic 5.51 along with VI Se on a winxp 64 machine.

    Is it working?

    Do I need a 64 bit sequencer?

    What is the memory limit for such a system?

    Logic 5.51? Good luck! If you can get it to run on XP64, and with VE, then theoretically you could use as much RAM as you have, leaving aside some for the OS. However, this is a big if, and I personally wouldn't go to the trouble of building an XP64 machine with a gazillion GB of RAM with Logic as my sequencer.

    Too bad for Logic. I am so comfortable with it.

    But talking about solutions, is a 64 bit sequencer needed for xp 64?

    Sonar is, but is also lacking of features like midi input transformer and the ability to record midi in the staff window along the other tracks.

    Cubase sx3 has those features but is not 64 bit.

    If you use Vienna Ensemble, you don't need a 64-bit sequencer. As I understand it, VE spawns its own 64-bit process, and can thus access - to use the technical term - a "s*** load" of RAM, outside the sequencer. It seems to me I've loaded 7.4 GB of RAM in VE under V-Stack, which afaik is only a 32-bit app. Just get your CPU, motherboard, and audio card sorted out, and you're good to go. Those clever VSL folks made sure you'd be able to take advantage of 64-bit RAM addressing, even without full 64-bit support at all levels.

    I am making progress.

    So an intel DG33FB mobo with an E 6850 cpu are already in the pipeline.

    With a RME HDSP 9652 or 32 soundcard and I will have to put my Creamware cards to sleep for a while. Or use them for mixing audio files afterward on another pc.

    Hoping that everything work as planned.

    You really don't want to get into 64bit sequencers, if you can do otherwise. Each of them has some kind of fatal flaw IMO, so my advice would be to stick to something like Cubase 32bit, which will give you up to 4GB to run all other plugs than VE, and then VE will use up as much RAM as you have, but in a separate memory space.

    One thing to be careful of is 3rd party 32bit plugs, running in 32bit compatibility mode. Think very carefully about which plugs you want to use, because some are known to cause problems.

    I wanted a vsl library for so long, in fact since the beginning, I think the time has come...
